Title: Front wheel bearing
Post by Mummra on Aug 18th, 2006, 1:07pm
Ok I am having a real problem trying to change the n/s front wheel bearing. It has taken me ages to source a 41mm socket to try and remove the retaining nut, but although it fits the nut the housing of the socket is too large and I cannot get enough of the socket on it. Anybody else had a similar problem? Anyone know where I can get hold of a socket that will fit?

I don't really want to pay somebody £50 to do it if I can do it myself.

Cheers
Dave

I bought a 41mm Draper socket to do the rear wheel bearings on my car.Page 39 in their current catalogue. 3/4drive Hub nut socket.Part no:TTD-MM,stock no:26669,Price £9.64 +vat. The 1/2-3/4 converter for a 1/2" socket set is Part No:T188. Stock No.19605.£5 30 +vat. (Page 37). There is another 41mm listed (Page 37) Stock no 10160 at£11 30 + vat. They do not appear to go to 41mm in 1/2" drive. www.draper.co.uk or 023 8049 4333.

£260 ! hell, that seems a lot . Anyway i would just trim socket with a grinder myself .  my local motor factor has a press & will remove & refit bearings for a small charge if you take the part of the car.

Yeah guys it's a special thin wall socket.

Most people buy a decent cheap socket & trim it down with a grinder as hellblue says.

A proper press is the right tool but a good vice can work, if your careful you can get then out with a hammer & blunt chiesel.
Then use a large bolt & washers to press them back in.

I did think about grinding the socket down, but as I had only borrowed it, I thought probably best not to. ;D
