Title: Window tinting
Post by Kjetil S on Aug 23rd, 2006, 6:24pm
Hello,

I was looking into tinting the rear windows on my saloon (with film) and got a few questions.

1. from the looks of it, the easiest way to cover the door windows are to take the glass out and add the film without the window in the door? Any comments?

2. How do I remove the "cushions" on the sides of the rear seat? It would make it a lot easier to get access to the quarter glass. Or do anyone have an easier way to do it?

3. How do I remove the high-mounted brake light? (and preferably the parcel shelf cover).

Any comments are appreciated.

Cheers,

Kjetil

I'd get it done professionally, seen too many home attempts that never work :)

OK, dont remove the glass, no need & its harder to do,remove door cards then remove rubber trim along bottom of glass(inside behind door card) remove trim around quarter glass 1 or 2 screws in bottom pull off (be gentle) pull brake light cover along shelf to back seat to remove, unbolt rear speakers from inside boot & remove p shelf cover.....! the next bit takes as long as it takes dont rush it & if its your 1st go plan on wasting as much film as you use !!!!                                           Clean all glass inside & out then clean it again use a foam backed green scouring pad ,drop glass 3 inches spray soapy water on out side lay up the film & cut to lenghth (film has to be correct way round with backing away from glass) trim top along glass then trim sides now peel down backing half way soaping as you go open door soap inside, place film on inside get cut top level slip in sides, work out water at top  then use a flat needle file at about 20degs. to glass to remove edge so rubber dont peel it back. shut window pull down rest of backing work sides in & work out air & water (dont use window for 3 days) now you know why its a £300 job !!!!!!!!!!!!!    if your still awake & want to do it i will tell you how to do a curved rear window when i return from holls.   I did my silver 2.3 all round & it looks the muts n*ts !!!!!!!!!!!!

1, yes, take the window out  of the door, it will look much better/proffesional

2, to remove the "cushions" sounds difficult, but is really easy, you needa large spanner to remove locking pins that the seat back lock into, follow the edge of the cushion, and prise out metal tabs from there holders? unbolt seatbelt at base, on top of cushion remove two small scews in plastic cover, then you can feed seatbelt through.... and hey presto!
unfortunatly i cannot remember if the rear seat needs to be removed or not?, but you will see  :D

before you buy the film, look at the quarter panel from inside, it will be tricky to get it looking proffesional.

3, the top of the rear brake light comes off, and access can be gained from inside, and under the parcel shelf (if i remember rightly)

tip, i reckon it will be easiest to remove all the rear seats, cushions and shelf in one go, tint all at once (check quarter panels first)
removal can all be done in less than 30 mins, same as refitting, you will need large torx bit for seat removal
(t25/30)

Ive attempted it twice the first time I left the glass in and it looked more like the dogs dinner than his nuts.
The second attempt I removed the glass and fitted the film with the glass on the bench much tidyer job but it is very easy to undo all your hard work when refitting the glass.
If or when I get the scorp done I will be paying a pro to do it.

Quarter glass is easy to do with only trim off,i never took rear seats out iether  plenty of room (im 5ft 10) but go with whats best for you .All film is laid up on outside & trimed to size first so having done glass out of a car i find it best left in, less chance of damaging film too

If it's your first attempt then I would take the glass out.
I did mine in but I have done about six or seven cars now ;)

hi there

remember that the front doors need to let 75% sunlight through. and they're already tinted.

i went for 20% tint at the back and rear doors and 15% on the front doors. not had any trouble with them. ;)

He was trying to get some but then he was thinking of selling it so he didn't bother. He is now keeping it so he may be on the lookout for some again.

well, dunno how much it costs, but living near brixton there's plenty of beemers etc that have kind of double tint; bottom half dark that graduates into silver at the top......looks pretty good....

My Brother has recently had his V70 done, £200 it cost him.
I did mine on the cheap for £30.

Well, I've now done both rear door windows, and I must say it looks nice. It's not perfect, but you really need to study it to see that it wasn't done "properly".

Got them done just before it started to rain too  ;D

Maybe I'll do the small triangular windows tomorrow.

Say, hellblue, where did your writeup on doing the rear window go?  ;D

And here are some piccies:

That rear window is probably going to be a b*****d, but hopefully I'll get most of the parcel shelf out.

Actually found a very nice little trick when it came to putting the door windows back in (didn't tint the windows in situ).
I found (the hard way) that just pushing the windows in again with the film on WILL rip the film, but putting a sheet of paper between the window and the door stopped that.  ;D

Ok then, same as befor clean glass inside & out inside 2/3 times, if your films not tall enough you will have to do it in 2 pieces.soap up glass & lay film up on outside with backing facing out trim film to size of glass for now(lay up 2nd piece of film if needed & trim as 1st piece,2inch overlap on other piece,i do half & half) now work out soap as if your fitting the film you will find the edges wont stay down cos of the glass shape. You now need a hot air gun/paint stripper the idea is to pass it over the rinkles slow enough to make them crinkle (this shrinks it)work this out with spreader as you go,to much heat will shrink it to much when its all laid down flat or all most you can now trim film to just bigger than the black spots on the glass (some one with a lamp inside helps) the blade need to be sharp & change it part way round if needed press hard enough to cut film but not hard enough to score glass.Any crap edges from the heat will now be gone,if you had to do it in 2 pieces you now need to trim the join you do this over one of the heated window elements so the join is hidden if not perfect (again a light inside helps) if you dont have a stedy hand you can use fine line tape as a guide.soap up inside of glass & with help & clean hands & loads of soapies remove backing ind fit film to inside (if you did it in 2 pieces then i put the bottom bit in first & line it up with the same element then the top bit then work out the soap) you will have to pull the wires from the heated window as the film needs to be trimed around the connectors.     There is a trick but you may not get it..... when you go to remove the backing pick it up half way across the film & cut it top to bottom(not the film)keep sight of the cut ends & roll up the 2 outer ends into the centre take the piece of film to the inside put the centre up to the centre of glass pull the backing off & it unrolls film out onto glass then do the other half roll, think about it,try it with some paper first!!

10 min job trim up just bigger than black spots then slip it inside simple.

It's always simple if you've done it before  ;)

Thanks!

Have done the small triangular windows today, and they weren't too difficult as long as I removed the C pillar covers. Only problem was getting the air bubbles out from where the black border fades (bad description, I know).

Title: Re: Window tinting
Post by hellblue on Sep 11th, 2006, 8:12pm
That can be a pain, it happens because the film dries and sticks to the black border, you then can not get the air out it seems to stick qwicker to this than the glass you just need to soap it up more, you may even have to pick the odd edge back up & soap it a bit more.
