Title: ARC/MIG welding the Scorp
Post by Sturdybloke on Aug 26th, 2006, 2:38pm
Afternoon fellow Scorpions (is that a word?  ???  ;D). Im having to weld a new sill onto the scorpio with my ARC welder (a stick welder in layman terms). Usually when I weld up older cars all I remove is the Battery, the Alternator and the radio cassete player to prevent damage to the items from the welder. Should I remove anything else from the Scorpio though as it has onboard computers, electric digital display dashboard and the multiplex wiring computer?

Many thanks - Craig.

The engine ECU and central control module are behind the glovebox if you want to disconnect them (<5 mins to remove glovebox).  Don't think welding is likely to cause problems directly - the voltages involved are quite small but at high current so as long as you clamp the return somewhere close to the work area (and on the body itself, not the engine or transmission) and be careful with the torch you shouldn't get problems.

ARC welder  :o good luck with that. A mig is easier.

All I do is just disconect the battery as Darren says as long as the earth clamp is as close as possible to the job you should have no problems.

Job done  8). Spent all of Monday doing the job. Makes the car look a bit scrappy as it has a sill in grey primer, but once it is sprayed in a couple of weeks you wouldent know it had had a new sill.

All I did was remove the Battery, radio cassete and the alternator.

Many thanks.
