i have to replace all four tyres on my 2.3 ult. est. i do lots of mileage with my family particularly on muddy cornish lanes, can anybody recommend a particular tyre?  money is tight but i do not want to compromise on handling so any info on lesser known names would be invaluable, many thanks!!  julie

Julie,

I use Goodyear F1's on my Cosworth (when it is running anyway!!) I have used Avon ZZ3's last time which were very good in the wet. I would prefer personally to stick good branded tyres on rather than lesser known ones but that is my opinion.

tbh a 2.3 estate is not really a high performance car, so i cant see any point in spending fortunes on high performance boots, and if you drive on muddy lanes the make of tyre doesnt matter, they will all get caked unless your driving a land rover.
one of the nationwide tyre companies (cant remember which one) often does an offer on their own brand (ambassador) buy one get one free, that might be limited to one per vehicle etc but even so you'd get 4 for 3.
failing that, individual tyre places compete hard against kwik fit etc so might be worth having a chat with one to see if they will do a deal.
you could also check ebay, there's sometimes people selling sets of tyres etc as they dont have the vehicle anymore, you might find a right bargain there, but, you might have to collect/add on postage, then obviously pay to have them fitted.
for a kwik fit own brand type, expect to pay about 50 quid including valve, balancing etc, add on 20 quid for michelin etc.

cheers for the advice lads. i've done a bit of research and have opted for a set of toyo's, reports i,ve read suggest they are pretty good in both dry and wet conditions with handling and have a good life expectancy, price is not too expensive! i'll let everyone know how i find them,   julie
