Title: Front door seals
Post by cossieguy on Sep 18th, 2006, 4:30pm
Right no laughing but, how do the door seals attach to the door frame ??? Are they glued in or just forced into a gap? Reason i ask is on both sides of my front doors the seals are loose just under the mirrors and i'm getting alot of external noise at speeds above 45mph. Have never really taken any notice before on other cars and these are completely different to my mondeos seals. The noise is really spoiling a lovely driving enviroment.
Cheers, Guy.

I havn't taken them off as far as the mirrirs but I did take mine off along the sill area to fit the amp cables. They just pulled off and pushed back into place

Sorry mate, just read it again do you mean the external one that runs the length of the door window

Yep that's right the external ones that run the length of the window. The bottom one is in 2 pieces that dont seem to touch each other(Strange). the front one under the mirror is very loose to the touch and holds water when wet.

Is it on here?

If it's no.13 my replacement came with plastic studs not screws or pop rivets as shown (it didn't have the the lug for the pop rivet).

Hi Dave, yes it's no.13. Where did you get yours from? And how much? On yours do 13 and 15 butt up together or is there a gap?
Cheers Guy

Cossieguy, same here. I had to replace reshape/fit mine last year after an attempted theft, bought a bag load of plastic clips and plugs from the FMD, the plugs push into the holes, the trim clips push in to the plugs...

Mine don't meet either under the mirror, I guess thay shrink with age; mabye I should fit some new ones ;)

Mine weren't rivited beneath the mirrors but I did remove the mirror to make it easier ;)

Hope this helps, Bruce :)

Hi Guy
Item 13 is in 3 pieces & held with 7 or more plastic clips that go into plastic plugs as TiberiuS says, also a nut at the top end. The metal trim is a squashed C section and the clips have 4 legs that spring into the channel, except the clip near the mirror is slightly different with a diamond shape instead of the 4 legs (not certain but I dont think this clip was on the old one but was where the arrow is on the new one). The two metal pieces slot together & go into a channel in the plastic backing & also glued.

Item 15 is 2 pieces glued together, the rubber window seal with a plastic cover which has a step in it to slot into item 13.

To be honest it’s pretty poor the clips aren’t very strong & you get the impression the guy designing it went off for dinner before finishing under the mirror & forgot to come back, if mine came adrift under the mirror I’d glue it back with some mastic.

The trim with clips was about 50quid plus Vat from fordpartsuk the clips about 15p.

When I got mine the trim was bent & in the boot. The car had some marks that looked like some tape had been stuck to the bonnet roof and boot, I suspect the trim had been pulled off in a car wash and had beaten the car with it - luckily the marks polished out

I think there may have been some changes over the years, I had to drill extra holes for more plugs than on the existing trim (my cars a ‘97 2.3 but don’t know what date the none-original door is).

Dave

Just had a look in the daylight, yes it looks as though the short piece of item 13 is held back by item 15. And to clarify - the old short piece didn’t have provision for a clip, but if I remember correctly the new one was modified to take a clip which went through an extra hole in the backing where the red arrow is on the picture.

Glad to be of help, by the way item 15 was coming apart on mine, I took it off (undo screw 8 & lift it up) cleaned it up & glued it together with silicon mastic. Left it off for a day to set - seems to be holding OK.

Dave
