Title: Temp warning light on diesel auto
Post by discodave on Sep 19th, 2006, 9:22am
The temperature warning light has been constantly illuminated on my diesel auto, does any one Know if a thingyy temperature sensor would have put car in limp mode? The temp gauge reads mid range. the engine is not overheating.

Dont think there is a temp warning light, is it not the coolant level warning light?

On page 8 of the owners handbook it says quite clearly that it is an emergancy overheating light on the diesel models. I have just replaced the sensor but the light continues to light up. Ford dealer thinks that this sensor could be hooked into the e.c.u and hence putting car in limp mode as a saftey measure. Maybe there is a broken wire somewhere. The centre dash lights, and the cigeratte lighters arent working maybe this has got something to do with it?

Does the rev. counter still work? had a diesel astra bring on temp & mil lamps & went into los mode with no rev counter it was the crank sensor at fault but why the temp light came on i dont know?

Temp warning lamp is indeed controlled by the ECU and uses a different sensor to that which feeds the gauge - look on the LH side of the engine and you'll see two sensors screwed into the rearmost cylinder heads (not sure which is which but easy to work out).

Cheers Darren,  like i have said i have replaced the correct sensor but the warning light continues to light even when engine is cold.  There must bve a break in the wiring somewhere. I am about to start following the wire back to ecu........

I don't know about the newer diesel like you have, but the older one uses the input from the CTS to help determine pre-heat time on the glowplugs - perhaps this could give you a clue? (light should go out much quicker when engine hot).  Thinking about, the new diesel also uses the CTS sensor and ECU to control cooling fans so if a bad sensor was causing the light to be on then the fans should be running fast too...
