Title: The Best Oil.....
Post by Sewingkit on Sep 26th, 2006, 7:51pm
Hi Boys and Girls,

Well, what can I say, I love my Cosworth Scorpio Ultima. I passed my test in Feb this year (aged 36) and jumped straight into one!!! I love it and it brings a smile to my face and I feel all warm inside when I look at her!!! ;D ;D

Anyway, silly stuff over.....

She is up to 114000 miles and I wanna take care of the sweetheart.

What is the best engine oil to put in it?  Recommendations please. I want to change the oil and give it a bit of loving attention. The oil is looking a bit crap and wanna spend that little bit extra to make her last longer.

Any general advice or tips to look after her, i do not know when she was last given a good service and I was thinking of spending some cash next year and having a proper Ford service done on her?

What do y'all think?

Steve

I would probably advice on changing all filters (esp. auto box filter and oil).
Others will have more recommendations as well.

'I was thinking of spending some cash next year and having a proper Ford service done on her? '

lol, you've bought the right car to part you from your cash.
theres an old saying; 'if its got tyres or t*ts, it'll cost you money and cause you grief'.

seriously though, if you can do most of the servicing yourself it'll save you a fortune.
change the oil and filter, but use engine flush to get rid of gunge first, as its a cossie use the best synthetic oil you can afford (it doesnt hurt to change oil on a regular basis, oil is the engines 'life blood').

change all the filters (its amazing the lost performance from a clogged air filter)

clean the MAF, a simple cheap and rewarding job, instructions are under diy servicing on the site.

change the coolant, dont know about the cossie, but on my TD it was suprisingly simple

if the brake fluid is black/dark, change that. brake fluid change is often overlooked but should be changed every 3 years

check the battery and top up if needed (MAKE SURE YOU HAVE A BATTERY COVER!!!!!)

then do stuff like check power steering fluid level, gear box oil level, brake pad condition & wear etc

other cossie owners can give you pointers to look for, and if you can get someone on here to do an OBD scan for you that could be useful.

Have a look at this:    http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/diy.htm before you go rushing off to a Ford Main Dealer.

Average Main Dealer Servicing costs are now between £40 and £72..... AN HOUR!

Personally, I wouldn't let a garage (any garage) near my car. You'll probably do a much better service yourself, and when you've completed it you'll have a really good knowledge about the car.

I'm not saying  Main Dealers are no good, but it stands to reason that if they take say 30 cars in for a service each day, and they have 6 mechanics, then in an average  9 hour day they can only spend 1.8 hours on YOUR car !! They also, sad but true, tend to prefer working on brand new cars. Quick throughput with minimum labour = more profit for them! :(

I spend a FULL day, servicing my Scorpio. Once every three months. It's a labour of love! Let's me thoroughly check the car over, and deal with any suspect items and spot any possible problems.

Do it yourself (and with a site like this you have all the information you could possibly need), and you'll KNOW that it's been done, and done properly. You'll also get to know all about your super new Scorpio.

BEWARE of some "garages"....and I use the term "garages" very loosely! They will 'service' your car, and it will come back with more problems than even Einstein could work out in a lifetime....

Idea is that you will have to keep returning with the car (because they always seem to "FIND" something else)..... to make lots of money out of you of course!!  There are plenty of these unscrupulous dumps, with shady untruthful characters ready to rip you off for as much money as they can.  Often they will actually CAUSE the problem deliberately.

These untrained baboons will deliberately loosen parts, break parts, hole exhausts and sills, spray 'fluids' around to suggest leaks, damage wiring, take parts off, and deny doing so, and pretend to have replaced parts without doing so.

Basically, a lot of these "House of Horror" garages are AT IT, and there's probably one near you!!  :o

You deal with them at your peril, and your wallet will be MUCH lighter.

I use Duckhams in mine, but it's all personal choice when it comes down to it.  I change my oil and engine filter every 3500 miles.

Enjoy the site, and your car.  :)
