Title: Buying a Scorpio Cosworth
Post by clarkster on Sep 27th, 2006, 12:49pm
Hello Everyone,

I have just joined the site as I am looking to buy a Scorpio Cosworth. I have been to look at one that has failed its MOT due to ABS and traction control lights showing.  It has recently had new rear drive shafts and bearings fitted.

I have had a read through other threads and from what I can gather it should either be a faulty/dirty ABS sensor, or the OBC Codes need cleared?

From other peoples experiences would it be worth taking it on?

Cheers

Well, afaik if both TC and ABS lights are on, then it must be a problem with the rear sensors (either wiring or sensors themselves).

I'm sure I read a post a while ago on how to clean the sensors, but I'm sure others have more info.
Iirc it should be possible to measure the resistance in the sensors and check if they are working correctly.

Hi Clarkster,

welcome to the site  :D

Do the warning lights come on and stay on when you start the car or only appear after you have reached about 15mph (then stay on until you switch off)?

Both ABS and TC lights being on would suggest a fault with the rear sensors. Having had new rear bearings fitted, it is quite possible that as the old ones broke up, the sensors attracted the crud from them.

It would be worth taking the rear wheels off then removing the sensors (1 bolt each) to have a look and give them a quick clean.

This happened to me recently, but not due to a bearing fault, the sensors just get dirty over time. A few mins with some WD40 on a rag and both lights went out.

Hope this helps  :)

Once again that age old question  ;D

Is it a Granada?

You cant get a haynes manual for a Scorpio 95-98 but you can get them for the Granada Scorpio Cosworth - 94

Highlander you slipped up mate, he said it has a T/C light so must be a Scorp ;D

The bad news is no haynes manual for a Scorpio.
Indeed no cossie engine is covered by a haynes, a copyright thing I think.

Good news is this forum & the main site is all you need ;)
