Title: autobox thump into gear !
Post by maddshooter on Oct 6th, 2006, 7:57pm
Hi All,
For some time now I have been trying to trace the cause of my scorp 'thumping' from 1st into 2nd. and also when changing down to 1st and 2nd to stanstill.

I had cleaned the MAFFS , checked oil levels and condition , traced the wiring harness for insulation faults and generaly pulled out my hair !

A short while ago I noticed that the speedo seemed to be very slightly 'sticking' from time to time and then progresively got worse and started to read inacurately
but always lower than the actual car speed.

I checked through the pages and hoped that it was down to the v.s.s. Bought a new one from my local FMD and yesterday fitted it............................

What a difference!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! now the computer knows what the engine and wheels are doing and all gear changes are baby soft just like it used to be.

The v.s.s. is only a push fit  and quite easy to access after you remove all the covers etc. but what idiot designed it and used a nylon/plastic type drive shaft!

Hope this some help to others and thanks for all the info and help the site still produces.

Chris.

Strange this, mine is slightly harsh also between 1st and 2nd. Not what I would call a kick in the backside kind of thump but noticeable none the less. Or perhaps I'm just paranaoid and this actually normal for these boxes  ???

It tends to drop as much as 500 revs when changing though I have noticed that if I accelerate slightly harder from standing than normal the change is definately smoother.
Sounds like something is sticking to me and your recent experience with the v.s.s now sounds like this could be the problem. Can't replace it at this moment but will clean and lubricate the rear spring. Fingers crossed hey  ;)

Mike

n.b. I've already cleaned the MAF and have no trouble codes showing at all   ;D
