Title: Engine heater
Post by Kjetil S on Oct 17th, 2006, 7:08pm
Hello,

as the winter is coming closer, I was considering installing a engine heater. Only problem is, where is the plug I'm supposed to replace with the heater located?
(2.0 16v)

I downloaded a couple of instruction manuals and they all state that I need to remove a frost plug (not sure if it is the correct translation) and replace it with the heater.

Frost plug possibly translates to a Core plug...

What product are you looking at?

Kenlowe produce a pre-heater with a circulation pump that simply plumbs into your cabin heater pipes..

Defa WarmUp (complete system with pre-heater, cabin heater and battery charger)

Yes it's definatly refering to core plugs.

Thes are pressed steel dishes that are pushed into the side of the engine block to seal the water jacket..

This is an 8v... You can just make one out belowe the middle branches of the plenum..

Was hoping it was a bit easier to access.

If you download or open the 2.0 16v engine manual you get a good view of the core plugs on one side of the block, Page 4 third diagram down the sheet. By looking at this you will be able to identify the others and find one that's more accessible to you (the proper pdf document is much clearer than this paste from it)

Directly under the 3 and just where the end of the arrow is pointing - even though it's not actually the plugs are being pointed out, it's the bit in front of it.

No need. I found it (in the manual atleast).

Seems like it will be an interesting job.

Yep and you don't want it to leak afterwards!!!

Hm, noticed something strange. Defa lists one heater element for the 16v's for 1995-1996 and a different one for 1996-1998.

I thought the 2.0 16v remained exactly the same from 1995 until it was removed as an option in late 1997?

I thought the block was the same from 89-end

I'm not familiar with the ones from 1986/87 and up to 1995, so you may be correct.

After some reading I also see that defa does a version that connects to the water pump inlet. This version supposedly only fits on 96 onwards? Isn't the pump and hoses identical?

I'm now hoping that this fits on my 95 as well, as it would save me A LOT of work  :)

So, can anyone confirm that the water pump on my 95 is the same as on the 96/97?
