I would try and empty it again, flush through the system with some anti bacterial washing fluid, then clean water and last fill it up again with screen wash.

Ah,  I wonder if this car    once  belonged  to a person  ( male, naturalmont )  who was so lazy he was not averse to topping up the washer bottle with  some of his  ahem,   own   fluid  if  you get  my  drift. ::)

i had this problem, i used to fill mine up with a watering can, with no problems until one day my washers started to smell, stripped it all down flushed it all out smell gone topped it up a week later smell back. to cut a very long story short my cat had started using the watering can as a toilet.

;D ;D ;D
Not heard of that for years as a youngster that was a favourite trick of a mate of mine whenever he got chance he would relieve himself into the washer bottle. normally other peoples cars of course.
and as for the cat I'm sure something could be set up with a small 12v battery an ignition coil and an HT lead that could be housed inside the watering can ;D ;D ;D
