Title: Autobox oil level check?
Post by harry.m1byt on Oct 22nd, 2006, 1:43pm
I'm new to automatics, both in the driving and maintaining of - so what is the correct method for this car?

For the engine, so I get a precise reference point I check it in my garage and absolutely cold. A new to me car will be checked for every run, just to see how much if any it uses. Once satisfied by this method, I will check it less regularly.

Using the same proceedure I notice the autobox oil comes just up to the full mark on the dipstick. Is this correct?

I have also noticed a small amount of rust on the above dipstick and also notice the same on every other car I have checked in the scrap yards, is this normal?

As near as an auto-newbie can tell, the box performs flawlessly.

the method of checking the ger box oil level is as follows:-

Get the whole of the engine and gearbox up to working temperature. After a good run is the best time.
Apply the hand brake on level ground and leave the engine running put the gear selection lever through all the positions a couple of times . put it into park lift the bonnet and check the level ( STILL WITH THE ENGINE RUNNING) it should be between the max and min marks, if it needs topping up check for leaks etc and add oil through the dip stick hole.
Chek the power steering also when hot and running ..
