Title: 2007 Stereo Problem
Post by Dave2302 on Oct 24th, 2006, 8:53am
Hi all,

After a few weeks trouble free motoring, a new gremlin....

Turned the stereo on on Saturday, all fine, after about 4 minutes the sound fades away and dies with vol at approx 12.  Tried it on CD still no output.  All LCD functions and buttons on head unit working perfectly, but no sound,  however, on Radio or CD if you turn it up to number 30 you get faint but distorted sound.  If it is switched off for a while, say half hour then it works ok but only for about a minute now.

Obviously there is an electronic component breaking down, but my question is has anyone else had this and if so was it the head unit or was it the amp under the dash ???  I'm quite capable of fixing it I just dont want to buy the wrong unit, then have to buy the other one !!!!

Also. has anyone got a decent 2007 and / or an amp for sale preferably with code.

Cheers in anticipation, Dave

My first guess would be the radio unit mate but you'd need to shove a scope on the outputs of both units to make sure.

Sometimes have this on mini hifi systems with module amps, feedback circuit goes awol causing similar symptoms, no volume, distorted sound etc. Got a similar problem coming on the 2006 on the Mondeo, both left channels keep dying when it gets warm, thought about upgrading it to a 7000 but I've had trouble with that one too...

Regards, Bruce.

Turn off AVC and see if that helps.

Hi,

Yeah cheers Bruce my guess is the head unit (I hope so cos its a lot of hassle to change the amp), so I reckon I'll try and borrow one locally to check it as its the easiest unit to change.
TT, my 2007 doesn't have AVC mate, I dont think any of them did.  But it doesn't make a difference if the car is moving or not anyway.
I thought about fitting a later unit but don't want the hassle of pulling half the car apart to change the CD lead and rewire the speakers, which is neccesary if you fit the later units.  Was quite happy with the 2007, so would rather stick with this system.

Cheers guys Dave

2007 does have AVC ( at least on my ultima it does. )

Press the CD button and then press it again a couple of times quickly ( I think ) and you can step through a number of options including the AVC.  I doubt it will help but it's worth a try.

I have mine off, I turned it on one day as it was off.. then I kept getting my volume being erattic.

But it does sound more like a dry joint on the AMP.

I never knew that suppose I should have read the Audio Book !!!  OK well will give it a try but have a unit on the way to try and hopefully an amp coming as well.

Cheers Dave

Hi,

Ok well finally got round to fitting the new head unit (Cheers Highlander), and that cured the problem, so obviously it was something breaking down in the pre amp stages.  At least I didnt have to go thru the aggro of changing the power amp, a right sod from what I can make out  :(

But now I got Music again and it was nice and easy fix  ;D ;D ;D

Cheers to all who helped with advice and bitz,

Regards
