Title: Star EEC-IV reader!
Post by harry.m1byt on Oct 24th, 2006, 8:41pm
I built my own version of the Star code reader yesterday and this evening got a round tuit - the testing of it (the star), combined with checking for engine faults using the star that is.

My version uses a 12v piezo sounder wired in parallel with a 12v rated LED, so I have a choice of watching or listening to catch the codes - well worth the extra few pence of outlay. The data tapping point (open collector) is supposedly rated for a small filament lamp, so it should have plenty of spare capacity for both and a great deal more.

Plug it in and it gives a continuous tone/LED lit even with ignition off, until you turn the ignition on and actually start the test sequence. Unlike the Granada, which only produced a tone when you got into the diagnostics.

Ran the static tests KOEO
Ran the engine on test KOER

Result of all the tests is 11, which translates to no faults and it has no faults stored in its (EEC-IV) memory.

So now star goes in toolkit with a code list print out for the day when I might have a problem.

I wrote above and did mean a 12v rated LED, but I notice http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/star.htm

Indicates the use of a 5V LED. Clearly this is wrong as the output is 12v and even suitable for use with a low wattage 12v bulb.

Are you sure the output is 12V?

It's a logic circuit output so no reason why it should not be 5v...

the diagram says 5V resistor equiped, so that will be fine..

Pin 3 is what is known as an open collector, the -ve side is simply pulled to ground when active. The positive (pin 16) is certainly 12v positive and remains 'live' all of the time. My 12v LED also shows fully bright when lit and the 12v piezo sounder makes full noise when the LED is lit.

Furthermore I have just measured the voltage across the LED and it reads about 0.6v less than I am reading across the battery.
