Im driving a 97 2.3 ghia x auto and I need to improve braking because I drive in motorway around 100 km per day. After driving a new megane, I started to think about what can I do for my scorp to increase its performance a bit. here in Turkey, there are some well-known brands but still it is nearly impossible to find something which is made for scorps... Any suggestions ?

- I need to know about maintenance of scorps because my car just passed 130000km on the clock. For example the airbags're never touched. the car goes well but I think I shouldn't wait for the problem...

note: the car will be ours for its life and ford spare part prices are going up. So I think changing standart parts with performance parts is a better idea.

I'm pretty sure mondeo brake parts are identical (95% sure), and would probably be easier to find.

I'm using lockhead brakes bought form a ford dealer as aftermarket part, also twice cheaper then original motorcraft, after two years they still look like new and work great ;)

ive got a set of EBC's with pads got them off ebay saving a small fortune ;D

i havent checked the braking system on various models, but if it uses flexi hose anywhere change these for goodridge (or similar) braided hoses.
also strip and service the calipers every year, i take it turkey is quite hot and dusty? would be worth re newing the piston seals. use copper grease sparingly as dust and grit sticks to it, and dont use it on rubber parts as over a period of time it makes rubber brittle.
i didnt know ebc make pads for cars, but in the bike world, i like many others steer clear of them as they are well known for 'eating' discs, although they do work very well.
also change your brake fluid once a year, i.e. when you service the calipers.
finally, remember the scorp weighs 2000kg and the brake design is over 10 years old.

Personally, I find the fitted braking system more than adequate to deal with normal and emergency situations.

Ford have been making cars a long time you know.

Unless you drive like a mad booger of course :-*

I have no problems in making the abs kick in on dry roads, so I would call it adequate ;D

I have a set of grooved discs (ATE Powerdisc) and aftermarket pads (Mintex) fitted, and they WORK.

Thank you guys.. I will need this information. By the way, in winter istanbul is really like England.. A bit cold and much rain. And believe me, istanbul has a very complicated traffic which prepares some suprises to drivers.

ATo I am surprised you find the brakes are not good as they should be.

I would check them to make sure they are O.K before going further.

brakes are working. The problem is the traffic jam and I face various problems during the day. So I need better brakes.

erm, you could slow down in advance when you see a traffic jam ahead....

The problem is people here do not drive responsibly. They can jump in front of you in a second or bus drivers can easily "invade" the road while you are coming from back at 80km/h(in Motorway of course). and I do not count streetracers or people who are in a hurry. Driving in istanbul is not easy a thing and in this situation, I drive responsibly as much as I can. this is why I don't feel safety enough.

hmmmmm, you're not far from russia, they always seem to be selling old stock of military equipment, you could start with a half track?

A cossie has better brakes which are similar to high spec Mondeo's ;)

When I got mine, the brakes were gone completely. I fitted Brembo disks to mine, with lucas pads. More than adequate performance in stopping the car.

The front pads on my 98 cosworth are the same as fitted on some mondeos but they dont sweep all the disc .

The brakes on my Scorp are great, I do mainly motorway driving (eg. braking from high speeds) and if I'd be on here groaning if I wasn't happy with 'em, trust me ;). A couple of times now cars behind have skidded out behind when I've slammed the anchors on in a hurry.

Aftermarket discs/pads are ok but can cause problems of their own. In the older Fords the brakes were a weakpoint, the front calipers on our Capri were from the Escort parts bin, much better nowadays though. The Mondeo has rear drums and no ABS but still stops well, keep the Ford ones serviced and they should be fine.
