Title: fitting new rear brake pads Post by micky5 on Nov 5th, 2006, 10:57am Hi, i know this might sound a little stupid, but i need to change my rear brake pads, and i dont know how too, and i`ve been quoted £60-£65, by my local kwik fit etc. ...so i`d like to do it myself, if anyone has any tips they could share, thanks in advance Micky |

Title: Re: fitting new rear brake pads Post by Simmo on Nov 5th, 2006, 11:16am Try reading This (http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/frontrearbrakes.htm). Text and pictures. You will need a 'wind back' tool for the pistons as they CANNOT be pushed back. They are on a 'thread' so have to be turned. A suitable unit, made by Draper, is available for a few pounds, and makes life easy. Look Here (http://www.drapertools-online.com/b2c/b2cbrowse.pgm) and enter 52334 in the search box. |

Title: Re: fitting new rear brake pads Post by Matt on Nov 5th, 2006, 5:56pm ive done em easy enough to remove (follow simmos link), also, if you find you cant get enough room to fit the new pads, the piston on the rears rotates, screw it in a clockwise direction untill it stops. also make sure the little tag on the back of the pad sites in one of the 4 grooves in the piston. one it's all fitted back to gether, opperate the handbreak a few times to opperate the self adjusters on the pistons matt :) |

Title: Re: fitting new rear brake pads Post by Simmo on Nov 5th, 2006, 7:33pm Matt makes a very good point. The grooves and the 'peg' need to line up as that is what maintains the handbrake adjustment as the pads wear. That is why the rear pistons are threaded and thus need to be wound back as opposed to the front ones which can be 'pushed' back. |

Title: Re: fitting new rear brake pads Post by mr._floppy on Nov 6th, 2006, 9:26pm Apart from the awkward winding back manoeuvre, it's a breeze, an hour should do both sides. PS, give the handbrake mechanism a dowsing with the blessed WD40 when you're there. |

Title: Re: fitting new rear brake pads Post by martin_rowe on Nov 7th, 2006, 8:57am 60/65 is quite reasonable for a rear pad change, dont forget you will need some special tools, a wind back cube is probably cheepest, will need 3/8 ratchet & extension also. |

Title: Re: fitting new rear brake pads Post by swiss tony on Nov 8th, 2006, 7:51pm Hi micky5, i did mine not too long back, it was easy enough thanks to the link mentioned previously, very helpful. I also got round the need for the special wind back tool by simply using a large adjustable spanner which saved me £15 all you do is set the spanner to fit 2 of the pistons raised blocks and turn away! Good luck mate ;D |
