Title: 24v lumpy idle? Another possible explanation...
Post by mazzy_j on Nov 8th, 2006, 9:52am
This may be of some help to anyone whose 24v lacks power or idles like lumpy custard when cold...

Last night i decided to put the battery back in my cossie after giving it a top-up charge due it not being used that much. Started her up and poked my head back undo the bonnet just to check that everything is in its place where its meant to be. What did i find... all 3 of the drivers side ht leads were sparking off along their entire lengths onto the silver octupus and the rocker cover!!

I couldn't believe it, so i grabbed my trusty (insulated) screwdriver and separated the 3 lead and moved them
away from each other and anything metal where they were arcing off to. Instantly the idle smoothed out  ;D

I'd been concerned that the car had been over-fueling judging by the amount of white petrol smelling smoke coming from the exhaust when cold, now it looks normal and is back to the catalyser 'cabbage' smell. It looks as though the insulation on the leads has broken down over the years and simply need replacing.

Off to Fords i go for 6 new ht leads...

Matt
