does anybody have have ways of checking to see if a alternator is charging.

i went to a garage and his machine sdaid my car was only putting out 11 volts but the dash is my car says 12 to 13.9 volts any ideas

Buy a cheap digital multi-meter, around £5 from the likes of Maplins. Voltage with engine running and no loads should be 13.8 to 14.4v. Increase revs to around 3k turn everything on and the voltage should be similar.
