Title: remote keyfob Post by pedropedro on Dec 31st, 2006, 3:42pm Ive wondered why the remote is so bad and the "conductive" contacts/buttons are the problem...if you measure with an ohmeter, resistance is around 1k with probes 2mm apart when good...conductive paint doesnt stay put for long...maybe folk know this already cut x3 neat squares of kitchen foil about 4mm sq and with small drop of superglue on each button spread evenly and fit on...press down with finger..leave for 30 secs ...its a tad fiddly... BUT range is now maybe 15m opposed to 2m |

Title: Re: remote keyfob Post by TiberiuS on Dec 31st, 2006, 5:11pm Good stuff for worn switch membranes too is self adhesive aluminium shielding tape...you can get a roll from Maplin for a couple of quid, about 20mm wide; I use it when I make audio cables, works well ;). Done a couple of typewriter keyboards with it too; keypad repair paint is great but it's £15 a jar and once you mix it you can't save any... Happy new year :) Regards, Bruce. |

Title: Re: remote keyfob Post by mr._floppy on Jan 1st, 2007, 12:01pm The downside with the foil trick is that the foil will eventually part company with the pads and cause a barrowload of trouble when operating the remote. I've tried all types of glues with varying degress of success. |

Title: Re: remote keyfob Post by Johnboy on Jan 3rd, 2007, 4:43pm Had a look at this problem. On the one I have. I had to stand right upto the drivers glass to make it work. So, took it apart and was going to use the foil trick. Didn't really want to. So, had a look at the circuit board and noticed a few small black marks on the contacts. Using some of the Mr's cotton buds on a stick thingys, wiped over the contacts on the board. Used about ten of them it was amazing how much dirt comes off these things. Put it all back together again and hey presto! It works like new. I can open and close the scorp form the other side of the road now. It worked for me so give it a go and let me know if it works for you. I have even tried the fob in my pocket and like magic it works. Good luck John |

Title: Re: remote keyfob Post by pedropedro on Jan 3rd, 2007, 6:35pm dont do the foil trick..as Mr floppy says it parts company as i dicovered today ! doors locking/unlocking whilst zipping along the gold contacts get covered with the carbon from the buttons ..yes ive cleaned mine with acetone makes a big difference but if could get contact resistance down on the button would solve full stop.....will try mixing some silver conductive paint with some adhesive tomorrow |

Title: Re: remote keyfob Post by TiberiuS on Jan 3rd, 2007, 6:53pm That's why I use the self adhesive stuff mate, doesn't fold over so easily and the adhesive backing sticks better. Done quite a few remotes/keypads with it now and yet to have a problem... Cleaning the contacts won't last for long, once the moisture wears off the carbon contacts start to lose their surface again, I've tried that one more than once. If you're convinced the foil causes problems then get hold of some of the 2 part carbon keypad repair, will cost you £15 but will fix the problem. |

Title: Re: remote keyfob Post by pedropedro on Jan 8th, 2007, 11:39am testing of the buttons is relatively easy...you will need a multi meter put probes across a button with approx 3mm ( not critcal but useful to have a reference distance as resistance will vary with a change of distance between probes tips ) should expect to see max 500R (ohms) .5K |
