Title: Heater Matrix Clogging
Post by Tony_Bradley on Dec 31st, 2006, 7:03pm
HI all

I've had a thought ......

Are there any statistics about where in the UK the Heater Matrix is being clogged up?

In London it is hard water..... look at the kettle

In Manchester and Birmingham the water is soft

Does where the water gets put in have any effect on the Haeter Matrix ?

Best Regards

Tony

That does sound as if it would be the likely cause, especially if the water is changed regularly in a hard water area, introducing a fresh batch of hard water each time. I wonder if the stuff they sell for cleaning out kettles might work?

It also might be a good idea to use filtered defrost water from the fridge/freezer for filling and top ups.

hi there

[]
that's what i was thinking. i've never have a blocked matrix on any of my cars as i live in scotland (soft water). that being said, i use to change the anti freeze every 2-3 years. the new stuff lasts 4 years+

i have a small weep from the matrix. had it since i got the car (4 years). you only smell it when you do the cc reset. i've bought a product called DX Radiator Stop Leak made by Unipart. some of the bumf on the bottle..........

stops leaks in your cooling system or your monry back!
specially formulated not to clog when used as directed, etc.

i'll use it today and  will report back my findings (might take a while as it only loses a wee bit of coolant every now and again).

A lot of car manufacturers suggest using deminaralised water becaus eof this very problem. Wuite cheap thing to do is to use LARGE  bottles of Scottish Water or from an area KNOWN to be of the SOFT variety... ;D
The use of HARD water in the cooling system can and does cause some problems.

Living in a hard water area is a possibility.

I'm in South Essex (very hard water), & I had to replace mine early last year.

One reason why this hard water theory may be floored, is the fact that I tried flushing (leaving overnight) the matrix with the most powerful limescale remover I could find, but it still didn't clear it  :-/

Filtered fridge/freezer melt water, or collected rainwater.
