Title: putting 2.5tdi into a sierra
Post by btl-norway on Jan 1st, 2007, 9:18pm
Hi

I will soon go ahead and put a 2.5tdi VM engine from a Scorpio 1995 into my sierra.

Is there anyone that have tried this before?

I don't know anything about the electical system for engine controll, but I guess I will find out.

I guess I will need to modify the trottlecable and I also need another speedometercable drive. The gearbox also have a hydralulic clutch-realising arm, that will need to be replaced with a clutcharm for a clutch-cable.

Thankfull you're using the early 2.5 diesel which has very simple electronic control (it will run without it as long as you power the fuel shut-off solenoid!).  The gearbox will fit straight in as the MT75 was used in nineties 2.0 Sierras.

Obviously the exhaust system may need modifying, but hopefully the radiator and intercooler will fit straight in (just a guess).  It would probably be easier to convert the Sierra to hydraulic clutch rather than fit a release arm and cable to the gearbox - I believe it can be done but the bellhousing will need modifying quite a bit and I don't think there are any available for the diesel AND cable clutch.

If the Sierra already has the 1.8D then that will be easier to convert as it will already have the correct instruments and wiring for glowplugs, however on the Scorpio the ECU ran the rev counter, whereas I think the Sierra uses a terminal on the alternator.  If you're lucky then the same terminal will be present on the 2.5D alternator and you can use that, otherwise you'll need to modify the instruments to accept an input from the ECU.

Also, the 95 Escort TD uses an almost identical engine management system to the early 2.5D but with the 1.8D engine instead so this would be a good pattern to follow for wiring, etc.
