Due to complications and continual fobbing off by garage and insurance company (it's a long story) my Scorpio has been in limbo for over 12 months now and not driven or seen in that time.

Thanks to Shaun I've now dropped off a cylinder head to the garage to complete the outstanding repairs.

I had to buy a Mazda Xedos 9 2.3i Miller in the meantime but I desperately want my Scorpio back. However, I'm not by any stretch of the imagination an expert on cars so am concerned about what will need to be replaced on the Scorpio having been sitting around for so long.

If I could have a list of things to change/replace then I can address this when the time is right. I've asked the garage to get it MOT worthy but I don't know whether that would cover everything.

Any help would be appreciated, thanks.

New battery I would expect for starters, watch for things that have siezed, brakes, handbrake, AC compressor etc, gear selector linkage if its an auto.

After sitting for that time I would give it a full service including all lubricants and fluids i.e. oil + filter, brake fluid, coolant. Oil + filter at the VERY least.

Expect the air conditiong not to work due to lack of use, hopefully will just need a re-gas.

As Stuart says aboe the gear selector may be stuck. Plenty of oil on this (accessible from underneath) should sort that out.

Battery may be useless.

Handbrake may be stuck on.

Check the tyres are ok.

Of course, it all depends on how well it has been stored. You may just need to charge the battery and drive off :)

If it has been stood in one spot for that long, the tyres will have probably develeped flat spots.

Flatspots normally even out after a few miles, it's when the tyres have been allowed to go flat that you get problems.

As the others said, seized brake caliper pistons (DON'T get it outside and try the brakes, I know people who've made this mistake ;)). AC has probably leaked out, with luck the compressor's ok.

And before you try and start it, change the engine oil/filter and brake fluid. Then pull the plugs and pour a couple of spoons of oil into each cylinder, pull the fuel pump fuse and turn it over on the starter to get the oil circulating.

Some of the pre facelift cars that you see on T plates and S plates probably stood for longer than that!!

Seriously, as has been said, lubricants, water level and linkages.

Also, try and start the car with your foot right down to circulate the oil a bit. (doing it with your foot right down means the engine will only turn over and won't actually start.... )

Thanks for all your input. I've started to collate a list and will look into this. I just don't want the garage ripping/fobbing me off any more.

If there's anything else I need to look out for, please let me know.
