Hiya,

I've wanted a Scorpio ever since they came out. Now I can afford one I've found myself a nice tidy 2.9 12v Ultima estate (1996) Its running at 178k miles but with a full ford history up to 160k which I thought was pretty good.

These are probably real newbie questions but I've trawled the site and can't see the answers.

1. Does my car have a MAF? If so can someone please tell me where it is because I can't see it? I assume the one in the pics here belong to a cossy because my car doesn't look like that...
2. It sounds like the transmission is whinny(?) at low speeds/gears, could it benefit from an oil change or could it be something else?
3. When it's cold there is a distinct flat spot, so flat in fact it will stall the engine if put into reverse and tickled backward!
4. The last big rear wheel drive automatic I owned had a torque tube with grease points in the bearings, does my Scorpio have these or have things progressed since the Pug 505 est?

Other than these little niggles, what a fantastic car ;D I wish I'd got one years ago now. My only real complaint is that it's not a Cosworth but maybe I'll upgrade later in the year.

1. No it doesn't
2. Is it an automatic? If so, take a look at the oil (wipe off the dipstick on a clean cloth and check the color and smell). I believe light brown or pink is okay (but I'm not the auto expert around here), and any smell of burning is bad.
3. Someone else surely knows ::)
4. Not that I know of.

The whine in first or second gear could be down to the fact that the pump is having to work a little bit in order to pump the oil around the gear box. Check as advised and then if required get it changed along with the filters in the box.
A messy DIY job and about £100 from a reputable place.

Does the whine disappear as the box gets HOT.
Don't foret the method of checking the gearbox oil level.
All done with the engine running and at working temp... Etc etc .

Clean the ICV and associated parts .

NO Known grease nipples ..

I think it would be fair to say it lessens as it gets hot but it never really goes away except at speed.

As a have a go hero I'll probably try it myself and then call in my pet mechanic to clear up the mess I've made.

I don't learn if I don't try ... (I don't learn NOT do it again) ::)

I have the same model, though less than half the miles on the clock and I'm still finding my way around it :)

Box oil colour seems to vary, depending upon what was used to last fill it. Mine is a pale yellow/brown. The important thing is that it should be clean and clear of any particals with no burnt smell. Check it hot, engine running and after working it several times through the gears and on level ground. Use a white tissue to check the colour and for particals in the oil.

Whilst parked, check for excessive delays in it engaging a selected gear after moving the stick out of nuetral - especially when cold. Mine tries to drive after perhaps 1/4 to 1/2 a second after selecting a gear.

Check the drive bands lock up once you are settled at a speed by watching the tacho settle back to a lower number. All changes should be nice and smooth and you should need to watch the tacho to see the four gears engaging, rather than feel them. Check the kickdown works briskly when you floor the throttle - its got a rather long travel.

Is the whine a steady one, rising steadily in frequency as the speed rises or does it vary as it changes gear?

Could be just differential whine, after 150K + miles there's bound to be wear.

Nothing serious, the diff will last for many thousand more miles.

You could spend a few quid on proprietry brands of gear oil that claim to quiten noisy diffs.
