Title: 8v vs. 16v?
Post by Amstaff on Jan 12th, 2007, 10:22am
What is the difference between 8v engine and 16v?

Is it possible to change the 8v to 16v without changing looms etc?

My 2.0 8v -96 is not running to good, and my friend has a 16v left over..

Or do I have to change the loom to?

Anything else I need to know?

Both use the EEC-V module so the sensors, etc. should be similar, as are the engines with the obvious exception of the top end...

Looked at this page and picture and in the picture it says 8v & 16v.

So I should just change Engines and the EEC-V module to the 16v and I should be fine?

But my car doesnt have PATS, wich means I need to install all those cables to and get "red dot" keys and remote?

EDIT: As Ive understood now the difference between PATS and not are the connected pins on the EEC-V.
Therefor if ill take the car from an Pats car and mine doesnt have Pats I need to install the Pats loom etc?

Just wondering looking at this, I've always been puzzled why Ford offered two versions of the 2 litre engine...and of the 2.9 engine come to that...I know about torque difference etc but surely this would be barely noticeable?

Any real reason or just Ford's peculiar idea?

Regards, Bruce ;).

Probably, as the engines were there and avaible, it was reasonably easy to offer the various engine options. As we all know they were also expecting sales numbers for the marque to be greater anyway. The expense is in designing and gearing up for the engine options, rather than fitting them.

True Harry but it doesn't explain why they had them all in the same model range. Perhaps having a 2.0 8v on the Escort and the 16v on the Mondeo and Scorp but why go to the trouble of marketing a model with all the different engines? Is the difference on a 2.0 that noticeable? When I drove a 2.0 16v Ultima, the thing I noticed was that my 2.3 was smoother on the revs...couldn't say it felt in a different world regarding punch...more low/mid power yes but not enough to justify another model :-/

I guess then you get back into the argument about bhp vs. torque, multi valve engines rev higher so produce higher bhp figures, sometimes the older engines have better low torque...

Just curious, been pondering on this for a while now ;)

Is that 5 or 6 different engine variants in total if you include the diesel?

Its predecessor the Granda had a similar range - it must have proven to have been financially worthwhile offering the range.  As said, I suspected that they expected a similar level of sucess with the Scorpio and they were trying to compete against the other prestige car manufacturers such as BMW which also have a wide engine option range.

Well, this doesnt really help me :D

Ok, some basic facts:

My car:
-96 2.0 8v, no Pats, no remote controlled central locking, no alarm system

Donator car:
-97 2.0 16v Ghia, Pats, Remote controlled Central lock. and alarm system

Both cars use manual gear.

I really dont want to change the entire loom, sure, If i want i can use the parts in the donator car and make my car a Ghia but ill take me many days to change the entire loom in the car.

So how do I make this work?

The only problem right now is to get the 16v engine to work in my 8v car...

All models had PATS

Well, mine doesnt, ive dont got that thing under the ignition switch (that registers right key), ive dont got the central control module and when Ford in sweden connected their computers to the car it said "PATS = Disabled"....  ???

They didnt understand why...

So thats why I´m so confused and why I really want to change the entire loom from the car that has PATS and all the things I need.

But it will take me about 1-2weeks to fix the car and change enginge, loom, and all other things that needs to be connected, and I need the car to go to work :(

But really, the loom (in my opinion) shouldnt be that hard to fit, i dont think i need all the stuff that Ghia uses, such as electric rear windows etc, only engine - EEC-V - instruments - central locking by remote and then it would be nice to fit the Trip computer to..

Maybe its been removed/disabled because of a previous problem?

"Note, connections is square brackets indicate pins for vehicles not equipped with PATS."

Hmmm a contradiction...

http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/alarmsys.htm

I think all Scorpios are fitted with PATS (hence your FMD being confused by yours) and that the wiring loom page is just a general 2.0 16v page not specific to Scorpios
eg the vehicles without PATS being other models? Escort? Transit? possibly?

It may be that all petrol engines had PATS but my diesel certainly doesn't and it wouldn't suprise me if some of the very early/low spec petrols didn't either.
