Title: Central Locking Question(s)
Post by yangi on Jan 14th, 2007, 10:01pm
Hi to All Scorp owners out there.

Firstly to say what a fantastic creation this t'interweb thingy is - surely this is what is was always meant to be for - finding out everything you wanted to know about your car but........... well, couldn't  :)
And what a great site this is, easy to navigate, great that the workshop manual stuff is here, great people to help......... Fab Fab Fab }{

Well, find almost anything :-/
As a Scorpio newbie, (but used to other marques forums) I have tried to find the answers within these well used topics - but failed to get to the answers I need.  Forgive me if the 'problem' is straight forward, but we all need that little bit of help sometimes  :D

Just collected today a 98 facelift Ultima Cossie 24v - and I have to say that after the quick viewing and drive the other day when I was smitten - I was expecting a number issues to arise once I'd parted with the fistful of 20's, but as the car ticked all the boxes on the non-mechanical side of things (ie: to me it looked the bo***x, had the interior, and had the right number of V's, and the big C in the title - and the price was very reasonable -  for something that ticked all my above boxes), I was prepared for a few headaches.  But so far, I cannot fault the thing really (well I can, but I'm not gonna for the money they cost!)

Okay, I'm sure in in few weeks I'll be pulling my hair out like the rest of you - but having just sold my BMW E34 M5 3.8 I've been conditioned to fault finding on a regular basis.  And anyway life would be so boring if cars JUST worked all the time ::)

Sorry to go on, let's get to - THE PROBLEMS:
1. Remote fob doesn't work.  Tried all the advice here - but probably (?) needs news batteries, so I'll try that first (and clean contacts etc) to see if that cures.

But thought I'd mention because
2. Central Locking doesn't work on Key (now I am assuming here that it should.....).

If I lock the passenger door from the inside, then everything locks apart from drivers door.

I can then lock/open driver's door with key. But all others remain closed.

Can unlock passenger door & boot with key.

So I'm not sure what I need to look at, as if the Pass door lock is controlling the other areas, it must be working from electrical point of view? (or is that a stupid statement :-[  )

Only issue I can find - but I'm unsure whether it has an effect - is that the bonnet opening sensor is probably c**p as I'm sure it should be 'erect' to make some sort of contact with the bonnet, but is lying there all sort of 'limp' :-/  But the Dash dosen't tell me that the bonnet is open, so.........

But if somebody out there can provide me with any words of wisdom (or condolences :-X) I'd greatly appreciate it.

Cheers All
Yangi
Loving it already - how can it be that comfortable?

LOL, what a post :D

Welcome aboard mate, you must really like your Scorpio if you parted with an M5 for it, one very quick motor...

To your questions:

1- Try new button cells (from memory, it takes 2 CR2016 buttons but open it to be sure). To reprogram it after the new batts you need to turn the ignition to position 1 and back 3 times, at which point you'll hear a chime. Press the unlock button on the remote and you should hear another chime. Turn off the ignition and it should work. If it still doesn't work, it's probably the contacts...look back and you'll see several threads on this.

2- Yup, it should work on the key. But sometimes the locks seize where they never get turned by the key or the key wears to the point where it won't turn the locks... There are other reasons however which somebody else will almost certainly take the pleasure in telling you about ;)

Bonnet opening sensor is a common gremlin, unless you enjoy your sleep broken by angry neighbours and car alarms at 3am, you might just prefer to leave it all limp lettuce ;)

Regards, Bruce ;)

Thanks Bruce

The M5 was a  ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D x 100, car when it was going okay - but like all  ;D cars it ended up causing more  :'( :'( than was really decent to experience!

Not only that, lots of recent changes in life meant that I no longer had the Time/Space/Money to contemplate keeping the beast.  So when it was eventually sold I looked at respectable replacement - in keeping with my wants - but thinking about my current financial situation - and narrowed down to Scorp Cossie or Mitsi Gallant V6 (you can't really beat a nice big fast 4 door saloon).  Well on VFM the Scorp wins hands down - even if the bills might mount up in the next few years......... but who looks to the future that much  ;D

As for the bonnet sensor - I might well leave that if it aint the cause of the problem  :D But I don't think it's a lock fault as the key works in all locks - just the central doesn't  :(

It's not a major issue - as I still remember cars when you had to lock each door individually (err, obviously my parents had them all those years ago!)  But would be nice to sort out.

Regards
Yangi

Hi Yangi,

welcome to the site  :D Sounds like you have got a nice Scorpio there, how about a pic?  :)

Re the drivers door lock issue, you will probably have to have the interior door panel off for this. Have a look here:

http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/doorlockrep.htm

for how to do this.

On the 4th picture on the above link you can see the lock barrel with a circlip on the end to hold everything on. Though unlikely, check this has not popped off.

More likely, IMHO, to be the problem is the item in the 5th picture, the large clamp type thing that actually goes around the lock. When the lock is turned this clamp rotates and a sort of switch inside it is pushed which then, IIRC, gives the signal to lock all the doors. Check this item is connected and moving freely.

:)

Hi Dave

Will sort out some pics once I can get my ar*e out of the comfortably seat long enough  :D  The (last of the proper) M5 wanted to be driven fast  }{ No, NEEDED to be driven fast - just because of the joy of Warp Factor when the needle hit 3750rpm in 3rd gear  :o - (get behind me satan!)  But for the moment, I'm loving the fact that the Scorp is a much more pleasurable, relaxed affair, and gets me there quick enough with the heart rate still at normal levels  :)

Thanks for the advice - ahh, yes, remembering the Bimmer central locking set up now, if the actuating arm didn't have enough travel to 'flick the switch' then the CL wouldn't work - the position of the seperate switch was adjustable.  Sounds a fair assumption that its not making a contact..... or is just not working.

Will have a look at that sometime soon, but not an issue at the moment as moving house soon, and that needs more work on it than any car ever will  :-/
