Anyone remember the problem I was having, that when I started the car from cold & put it in reverse, it felt like the engine was gonna shake itself out :o

Also, another post I wrote about the engine revving & the fans coming on when it was warm :(

Well...a couple of days ago, the engine revved & the fans came on....so I quickly jumped out & looked under the bonnet......I could clearly hear what sounded like the fans on high........but they weren't going round ???....but there was still a noise like the fans going nine to the dozen ::)

The noise seemed to be coming from the inlet manifold area......but it sounded exactly like the fans were on full speed :-/

I pulled the plug off the IACV & the noise dissapeared (idle went wacky as well).

This morning...I put it in drive & it went lumpy, put it in reverse & it went lumpier....put it in neutral & the revs evened out for a bit, then it stalled ???....started the car again & everything was fine ::)

Is that really the cause of my revving when warm (& making a strange cooling fan like noise), & also the bad idle when putting it in gear when cold :-/

Also...anyone remember a very old post of mine about a strange harmonic tone coming from the engine...that couldn't be pinpointed ::)

& another theory....could the IACV be the reason for my very occasional pinking (seems to have all but gone now, but still gives the odd rattle every now & then) :-/

Well, anyway, I'm gonna ring FMD on Monday morning & order a new IACV.....because I'm convinced that this little **** is the cause of most, if not all of the above problems.

Opinions anyone ?....... :)

JC, I had an 'idle' problem and tried cleaning,swapping etc the IACV but in the end bit the bullet, got a new one from Fordparts UK. £80 88 inc VAT and £5 postage. The part no for the 2.3 is 1058383 and the gasket 7090339. Make sure you check the numbers as the one for the 2.0ltr (mine) is different. Cure was instant!. Hope you have the same luck. ;) Mike.

hi jc

also check the resonator for any holes, etc. though i think the noise is more of a whistle.

also make sure there's no air leaks from anywhere.

The EEC IV has a built in function as a part of its diagnostics to check the IACV. It runs it through a series of tests adjusting the idle and measures/compares the results against what it ought to be able to do. I'd be surprised if the EEC V can't do similar.

Gulp!!!.......£80 for a new IACV ::)

Maybe I shouldn't be too hasty about buying a new one.....maybe I'll try & get my hands on a second hand one, & hope that it's okay ;)

Which is the IACV? I am breaking a 2.3 Ultima at the mo so should have one.

Scorpius.....It sits on top of the inlet manifold :)

Oh...just a thought....you wouldn't happen to have the inlet manifold as well, would you ?

Before you consider getting a replacement, new or used, why don't you first give it a good clean? These things tend to get gunky over time, and then they do funny things. You can easily separate the solenoid from the valve body (two small bolts if I remember right) and free the valve with generous amounts of carb cleaner. It only takes a few minutes so it's well worth a try.

I cleaned it with carb cleaner & dabbed a little 3in1 on it a few months back & the valve was sliding nicely.
It's probably the solenoid that's at fault....but I'm gonna take it out tomorrow & separate the valve & solenoid & give it another clean.....then see how it is over the next few days :)
