driving round a multi story today i could hear what sounded like crinkley paper caught under my scorp, not all the time but enough to annoy me, so i had a quick look, found nothing, so flipped the bonnet. the only thing i noticed was in the belt area; the lower down wheel/pulley central and right at front of the engine has a slight ocillation or wobble. the other wheels and pulleys seem fine, as does the belt tension. if i can get a socket down there behind the coolers, is it just a case of tightening the socket (which is large, maybe 36mm), or am i looking at the begining of troubles and a lot more work?

As that bolt is probably one of the biggest and tightest in the entire engine I would doubt that it has suddenly slackened itself, but do no harm to check.

More learned posters will maybe confirm, but I think the main pulley on some models has a vibration damper.

cheers floppy, anyone know if this is the likely cause i.e. failing damper?
