Title: keys and ecus
Post by tintin on Feb 24th, 2007, 1:18pm
Hi,

To confirm, i just changed my ecu with a s/h one from a car the same year. Worked fine, and it did NOT require the key from the other car nearby to immobilise it. I assume, therefore that the PATS system is the part that checks for the correct key.

Reason being, i have the red key from the other car, so was thinking of changing the PATS over, then i can use the red key to programme away to my hearts content (and get keys cut accordingly). I only got one black key with my current car, and it worries me.

Anyone confirm?

Cheers

Your assuption as far as I understand it is CORRECT.
The PATS holds the codes for the system and NOT the ECU you can change the ecu without it affecting anything else.
You can change the PATS module as you stated and use the different keys but you would also have to change the LOCKS and the IGNITION lock , but it is possible.

dont fancy changing locks, so an alternative?

swap the PATS, pull the metal part out of the key ive got and glue it into the red key. then get more keys made from my spare black ones, to the same design as the red key, and programme them.

ta da, red key, 3 black keys, and a working remote, for the price of a few keys cut.
