On the news this morning it said that the main problem is fuel from the main supermarkets,Tesco,Sainsburys and the likes.

They dont know yet, they're still tracking back. Test results due on Friday
I'm sure everyones watching what they say, if you publicly name a garage/supplier/supermarket which then loses customers and turns out not to be selling dodgy stuff (or not proven) you could be in a bit of bother ;)

With advice from Quenten Wilson on ITN news last night . Filled up one of my cars today with BP Ultimate.
He stated, this is one of the only fuels that is 100% safe. 97 RON
It's pricey though. 1.05 per litre. Worth it until they can trace the problem if any?
Car seems to run far better though

i'd be wary of things quentin wilson says, he's paid to say them.
however, i think you're safe if you use fuel from any of the major garages rather than super markets....

dunno about bp ultimate but the cossie ran fine (untill i crashed it) on optimax and the v power stuff from shell

If a 4.0 inline 6 runs ok on V-max, I'm sure a Cossie won't complain ;)

True, there is rubbish in the petrol, same as there's rubbish in any mass produced cheap product...but I'm thinking this is an elaborate plot to make people willing to pay over a quid a litre if they think it's the only way to avoid damaging their car.

The problem comes when you own a higher tuned car and the fuel starts coating the sensors (not just the o2 sensors) and the ECU has a hard time compensating. Then you get the Nikasil problem I mentioned in my last post, luckily all Scorpio engines are steel lined and not damaged in that way by sulphur.

Regards, Bruce.

I agree. I think this is a scam by the petrol companies.

Have you EVER heard of ANY big company coming clean about any problems that arise with their products!!!  :o

Well just had a call from my Mum - filled her car up last weekend, unusually at Morrisons in Thamesmead (SE London) - her engine light has just come on her Hyundai. She called the main dealer who advised her to run the petrol down then fill up with Shell!

Is it worth getting to the sensor and cleaning them/it?

If it is too much silicon is it worth diluting it now?

Cheers

Dave

Dave, No update on the BBC news site at the moment. Announcement due AM. There is a comment that silicon dioxide will form on the sensor and there was an earlier comment saying that in some cases traces of a white substance have been noted on the sensor. Possibly a 'clean' will do the trick perhaps the garage thought Shell would do just that. Mike.

hi there

i've told my niece to add fuel injector cleaner and then fill up with shell 'v' power. you might be able to burn the silicon off with some 'spirited' driving if you've not got too much of the dodgy stuff in the tank.

watch out for the cameras, though! ;)

I used to find problems with supermarket petrol about 15 years ago, while running an Orion injection and a Vauxhall :-[ Cavalier. I remember discussing it with a mate who built a Silver Leader kit car and we both had exactly the same problems as in the current scare: stalling, pinking and loss of power. As soon as we filled up with a premium brand, the problem was gone.

Slowly however, I've drifted back towards Tesco and never had a problem with either my 2.0 16v or the cossie. The last couple of weeks I've been filling up with Shell (just how it worked out) but I was just entering the petrol station at Tesco Sandringham when I heard the news item on the radio! Phew, close shave!

today on three counties radio it turns that MORRISION'S IN CAMBOURNE HAS BAD FUEL

a lay filled up there and so far has had to change the lamba sensors twice, £140 each, dunno what it was, but the scorpio is only £44 each

I did say it was a Hyundai didn't I ;D

Thanks for the tips - will have a look over the weekend - if the sensor is easy to get to I may take it out just to see!

Well, if tescos and morrisons care to deliver the stuff to me at 0.00001p a litre, I have a '88 3.2 XR4x4 Turbo that will gladly dispose of it all in a few weeks

Whats an oxygen sensor ?  ;D

Its been on the news that some supermarkets have had to drain there tanks, hope anyone who has had problems gets there money back. but i doubt any one will, but it comes back to the same old thing by cheap get crap, the supermarkets have a idea to make money on something which knocks out all the small guys, bakeries, butchers, then they put the prices up and the quality goes down they simply cant handle the amounts needed. you try getting fresh rolls in the morning

I've been using Sainsbury's Super (97 RON) for over a year - no probs. BTW Sainsbury's suppossed to be supplied by BP so theory is the Super is Ultimate without the special additions.

There's a list full of people over on Jag-Lovers with problems related to dodgy fuel (i.e. sulphur content etc), but it's down to starting problems and the like, not directly related to this.

Will be interesting to see what people find at MOT time though, I pass the local Morrisons and Tesco most days, amazing to see the forecourts still packed the day after the report :-/

I know money gets tight but it's cheaper to put good fuel in than pay later at MOT/service time, surely? ???
