Title: Will not fire
Post by ricmar on Mar 2nd, 2007, 2:47pm
My neighbour (not on the internet himself) acquired an N reg V6  2.9 litre Granada Scorpio Ultima a couple of months ago. It did not have a battery cover (but now has) and time has been spent drying out the electrics but the front lights are not working.

However, main problem is that the engine turns over but will not fire. Only a weak spark is produced by the plugs even though a new coil has been fitted. The battery is in good condition being regularly recharged when it is taken out of the car.

As a newbie any suggestions I could pass on to my neighbour (who is usually pretty proficient on the mechanical side) would be more than welcome. Thanks.

If the battery has been off check that a small black lead has not been left off. Can easily drop down the side of the battery and be missed. Secondly if the drivers side fuse box has been 'attended' to check that the large connector has been replaced correctly. There are two lugs on the base and the two pegs on the connector MUST be fitted in to these BEFORE the unit is pressed home. It WILL fit wrongly. The saying here is 'If it went on first time it 'aint right' !.

If that fails read THIS page (http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/faultfinds.htm)

its worth checking the PATS led  (red alarm light on the dash) to see if its flashing rapidly.....can flash an error code at you as well,

Try another battery, they can turn the engine over fine but not have enough in them to fire it up.
Petrol?  ;D

Is it the 12v or the 24v?

Just to say many thanks for the very prompt replies !

I have passed these on to my neighbour (Bob) but mainly due to the weather he has not been working on the car this weekend. Before the rain started he  did check the battery connexion though and could not see any small black lead that could have been left off.

Anyway will keep you informed and thanks again  Simmo, tintin and Highlander.
