Title: The turbo?
Post by Jaye_Martin on Mar 19th, 2007, 11:03pm
A little advice is needed please...firstly thank you to Mazzy-j for coming down to my house to check my TD Ultima.

We were somewhat concerned regarding the turbo.
The fins are all present, the turbo turns manually..without any apparent noises..however there is a slight bit of play with the turbo ..very very slight..movement up and down.
Would oil, when being pumped into the turbo, take that play up...or shouldnt there be any play in the turbo at all?
Both Mazzy_j and I thought it looked normal..but a second/third opinion would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

The turbo shaft floats on a fairly thick film of pressurised oil (needs to be to cool it), so there's going to be some amount of play, but very little.  If you've got too much then oil will leak into the induction system and either cause blue smoking when revved after a short while at idle, or in severe cases, engine run-away and damage.

What's the problem you're having?
