Title: Repairing Your Key Fob
Post by wudz on Mar 29th, 2007, 9:57pm
Hi,
I know similar repairs have been mentioned before, silver foil, silver contact paint..etc...but this works long term and can be re-repaired when the replacement pads wear....
On my first failed attempt at repairing, now on my second attempt got it sussed.

If your contact pads are worn slice them off plus about an extra 1/16" and then find yourself an old TV remote and slice off three of the little used pads (I used an old Ferguson Sat Remote as the pads where about the same size as the original...some remotes use tiny pads, too small).

This I did with my first attempt and used evostick to fix the new pads...lasted only a couple of months..

I have now used silicone and been working great for the last five months.. :)

Take great care and make sure you do not get any silicone on the pads contact surface..I used a tichy piece of Blue Tac on a needle to place the new pad on the thin silicone bed applied to the keymat then leave over night to dry.
If you accidentally nick the pad when cutting...as I did :(, don't worry the silicone will fill and repair any butchered buttons...thank goodness... ;D

Super glue is a no no.. :(

Just make sure the new contact pads are below the surface, hence cutting down a 1/16" well...

Hope all makes sense... silicone is the future.... ;D

Cheers

John

what a smart idea......lateral thinking

i will try on spare fob I have..Ive used silicone as an adhesive before and few folk know how effective it is other than a sealant...used for coat hooks on wooden doors etc ...impossible to remove

didnt think of using old remote buttons!

thanks

Used silver foil and superglue on mine.

100% success...

Hi Rik,

Ok about the foil, I was concerned about the hardness of the foil as you make contact with a copper matrix on each press would eventually wear the print board as against the softer carbon coated pad...
Mind you it could take years, but being an retired electronics engineer old thought and habits die slowly..

As far as the superglue path, again my experience is that it makes the rubber go hard and brittle...but again time would tell and may out live me and the car ;D.
The long and short of it is if you found it Ok ...Great as it is easier to use foil and I may have over engineered the problem :).....
Another good point of silicone is it is easly re repairable as super glue if as you say works is what it is called Super Glue ;D...

Either way saves cash which is required as the Scorp gets longer in the tooth...

Cheers
John
