Title: Fitting a late (facelift) grille to a 'P' reg
Post by Loofer on Apr 6th, 2007, 5:23pm
Hi all,

Sorry if this is a daft question but i'll ask it anyway. I recently bought from ebay a late grille from an 'R' reg and after painting it last week, i have fitted it today to my 'P' reg. It fits  :) but the mountings at the top of the grille don't correspond to the bonnet  ??? !! It's fitted with only the two side fixings and the two lower fixings to the little support struts & It doesn't feel very secure. Can anyone tell me if there is another bracket i need from the later bonnet or are the bonnets different, in which case i shall make some sort of brackets myself.
Cheers in advance
(it does look the business  ;D imo)

Yes, you need a converter plate which fits to the holes in the grille and lines up with the holes in the bonnet. The bolts were in a slightly different position on the facelift grilles to those on the chrome ones!! Heaven knows why. The facelift grille has captive brass nuts in the plastic that fit the bracket and then to the bonnet.

They are all like that, so it isn't the bonnet that is any different. It might be that they figured it would be more secure than to have the plastic grille directly onto the bonnet so it didn't crack when shut!

Thanks Baz,  :D
Your'e a star. Not having taken the grille off myself and not having anything to compare with i couldn't be sure. I shall source a converter plate and complete the job.

AB,

you may not think of it as a converter plate but it is more a strip of metal which fits to the top of the facelift grille. The holes in the plastic of the facelift grille just do not match up without it. I have seen a few cars in breakers yards with facelift grilles that are only fixed by two bolts because the plate is missing.

I will see if I can photograph mine to illustrate
