Title: My car broke down...
Post by sector-9 on Apr 6th, 2007, 11:30pm
This afternoon, was reversing into parking space at Tesco and there was a noise and then the smell of hot oil.  Got out to have a look and discovered the alternator pulley and fan lying on the floor!  :-/

Looking closely, it wasn't just the pulley and fan but also the front part of the shaft which had sheared off, however I could still spin the rotor (roughly) with my fingers so it hadn't seized.  To make matters worse, the car was now dripping oil from the alternator.  >:(

Anyway, long story short, the AA towed me home and I took the alternator off tonight.  Thankfully the vacuum pump wasn't leaking or seized so it must have been the rear oil seal on the alternator got damaged when the shaft snapped.  Now the alternator is off I need to source a replacement with a) stud terminals on the side, and b) splined output shaft on rear to drive the vacuum pump.  Alternatively an alternator complete with pump would do me fine.

The unit fitted is a Magneti Marelli which is obviously not the original as there is a label on it dated March 2003.  Does anybody know what other units are suitable as a direct replacement?  Looking on ebay I think the Transit alternator pre-2000 might do the trick but I'd hate to buy one, wait a week to get it and find it's no use...

Hello mate.
It sounds like your driving a Turbo diesel. If you give the lads, oops & lasses some details they may have a unit sitting around. :)

Good luck ;)

Good point!  It is a pre '96 turbo diesel engine with the rear mounted vacuum pump (the later ones have a front mounted pump and are different).

Anyone got one of these for sale?  My car is stranded without it!

Vaccum pump on the alternator??
I have a 90 amp 2.3 alternator here, and a Cossie 100amp alternator that i think needs brushes changing if either are any use, and as i am in East Leake, i am just down the road.

Unfortunately unless they have a splined output shaft on the rear and stud terminals on the bottom then they won't accept the vacuum pump, but thanks for the offer.
I'll get one from Sutton Auto tomorrow - £103 inc. VAT and exchange surcharge!

Vacuum pump on the alternator....?

Now was it a Transit diesel which had a fuel pump running on the back of the alternator? It's a while ago, but I rememeber it leaked through to completely wreck the alternator.

Wouldn't have thought it was a fuel pump on the alternator, but running a vacuum pump from them is fairly common practice (the Transit one looks the same as the Scorpio in the photos) - however most modern cars have the vacuum pump mounted between the pulley and the alternator and indeed this is the arrangement on post '96 diesel Scorpios...

P.S

Got a replacement alternator today - £89 minus pump and with my old one in exchange.
