Title: Good tyre supplier?
Post by adowds on Apr 15th, 2007, 7:06pm
Hiyaaa,

I'm so pleased with the MOT'd 24v that I want to treat it to some hot-poop new rubber. So, any recommendations on tyres, and where to get them around SE London?

I'm prepared to pay up to £75 a corner. I have the 12-spoke soft alloys, so it's 225/50 16s I guess...

Not so bothered about mileage, I don't do many miles. Grip and ride (are they mutually exclusive?) would be my worries.

Cheers!

Korean aren't they? I can get Goodyear GSDs for a little less cash at the local place. Would be tempted by a bigger name, is this irrational? Avon/Continental/Firestone are around the same money.

Michelin/Pirelli would be nice but silly prices...

I just know what a difference good rubber makes!

btw, in my experience of a lot of makes on (mainly) my scorpio.....

avon = wear very quickly
conti's = noisy
firestone = not used the spare ;) 'nuff said
Pirelli = mega grip, mega noise, mega wear. :o
Michelin = not tried as very expensive :(
Vredestein = very good, but getting more pricey now :-/
goodyear F1 = great grip with lots of noise and wear

Ace, thanks for that mate! I never thought of noise, not really used to cars as civilised as the Scorp! I had some Bridgestone Potenzas on my Nissan 200SX in the past (my mate was the bike PR man, and got me them f.o.c.) and they were lovely, but only lasted about 10k on the rear, erk!

Scary dear they were too, £130 a corner six years back.

Anyone else got tyre experiences to share?

Got a set of Contis on the Jag, no problems with them at all ;)

A lot of people say that the Pirelli 6000's are noisy...can't speak, haven't tried them.

To be honest the Scorp had a set of brand new Korean 'Nexia' tyres fitted...always meant to change them but they ran fine so never did...lasted me 10k with no more than 1.5mm wear, never had any grip problems and had a nice symetrical tread pattern :)

Regards, Bruce ;).

Aye, it's tempting to go for some cheapies. But I've ridden loads of motorbikes over the years with cheap/worn rubber, and changing for a new set of proper boots really is like night and day. I don't think cars are so sensitive, but would still like to do the right thing!

Kumho's race efforts is encouraging - I remember a bike GP rider telling me he didn't really trust tyres from firms that didn't have a proper race department. I guess it's the best way of really developing your product.

Hey...I'm not endorsing them, just saying they worked ok while I had the car but then a 2.3 isn't a 24v and I never really drove it hard :)

But, they wore well over 10k and drove fine with no problems...that's all I can say.

Almost forgot, I had Michelins (at least I remember they were) on the Sov V12 and the ride was looooveeerly...

Oh, the ones on the Scorp were Nexen...not Nexus...Nexus is a type of missile in Unreal Tournament :-[ ;D

Regards, Bruce.

No worries Bruce - very grateful for all inputs! As you say, the cheapies would no doubt be absolutely fine. But I suppose you do get what you pay for...

I have always had Michelin so can't compare but they seem to last well - only replaced one due to wear as the others have been destroyed by debis from builders vans!  Last one was a 6" frame screw!! >:(

I use ATS in Pickford Lane, Bexleyheath - cost between £75 to £90 depending on the offers they have on!

I got some Vredestein Ultrac's on my 16v and the grip is just amazing. Haven't managed to make the traction control or ABS kick a single time after fitting them, and the gods know I've tried  ;D. Fairly quiet too. However, they're not cheap, and I don't know how fast they wear (yet)  ::)
