I have been contemplating making a freeflow de-catted exhaust for my bus . I am aware this is frowend upon by MOT and police folks. still it is something I would like to do. my friend tells me I will probably have a 'lamar' sensor to check for unburned fuel in the pipe. Suggestions on how to disable or remove this sensor would be appreciated . Ps I only intend to use my creation on the track , not the road... cheeers all. :)

hi there

you need two (V6) and you MUST fit the pre cat lambda sensors, and it would be easier to fit the post cat ones as well, just an extra bit of welding.

im running mine without cats, all i done was take both cats off and bash all the inners out, then put them back on, it works fine and a lot more power

I would be tempted to get an old set of cats and remove the innards.
That way you still have a set of intact cats at mot time.
My car failed its mot on emissions and when I removed the cats to replace them they were empty. To be honest I felt no loss in performance when I put the new cats on.

Just emptying the cats creates air resistance, the idea of straight through pipes ;)

I'm told it can be done but engine needs to be in good tune (EGR, injectors, lambdas) to pass the emissions on the MOT....

so does it look like it would be beneficial to go for what the boogie man suggested and out the innards ? beneficial in ways of power increase, or a little louder ? thanks folks.

I am told there is more than one way to skin a cat !

i dont think it is any louder, but it does tend to push you back in the seat a lot more

When they're new cats don't detract greatly from the performance except at high revs. However as time goes by they get blocked up by carbon deposits and such and performance does suffer, particularly at high revs as it restricts the exhaust gas flow and the engine uses some of it's energy pumping the gas through the restriction (bit like an exhaust brake on lorries). On the 8v and 12v models it wouldn't be so noticeable as the smaller air throughput of the top end restricts power at high revs anyway. 16v, 24v and turbo engines would notice the effect of clogged cats and are more likely to benefit from de-catting.
