Title: Coolant low light, airbag diag light weirdness.
Post by adowds on May 7th, 2007, 8:02am
Hey guys,

I had no airbag diagnostic light on my dash, so suspecting foul play, I investigated. A look at my clocks showed the LED was actually missing - is this right? My car is a Jan 95 24v. The small circuit board under the temp gauge had the LEDs for oil, brakes, ABS, traction control and washer fluid. But the LEDs for airbag and coolant level low were totally missing - looks like they were never there.

So I sourced some replacement clocks, and when I plugged them in, got a single flashing airbag diag, sorted by swapping the driver's bag. All good. But now, the coolant level low warning light is on, presumably because my car didn't have one originally, and doesn't have the switch or wiring required to operate it.

So, if my car didn't originally have the coolant light, how can I make it work properly on my car? Is the level switch in the coolant reservoir? Will the wiring be in place? What do I need to make it happen?

Cheers!

Al

Hi Al,

you'll need to add the wiring and the switch which fits to the underneath of the coolant tank.

or remove the bulb

It's a soldered-in LED, so I'd have to do a bit of butchery which is risky.

Do you think the wiring is in place already and just not used? i.e. if I get a coolant tank with a level switch, there will be a plug in the vicinity?

I'm going to go out and do a few jobs later on, will have a closer look. There is actually a loose two-way female connector in that area...

(Quick edit) the wiring was not in place on mine (so check where I have said below) and the position on the rear of the clocks had a wire going to the shorting out bar! I had to remove all that and using the wiring diagrams, work out which connection it was. That was the easy part!!

I fitted the coolant low level indicator to my S reg and as Highlander says, there is a sensor which "push and twist" fits into the base of the coolant tank. The wiring goes along the side of the car and there is a connection just at the back of the engine bulkhead and in front of the wiper moter. If you look on the little wall there, you will see a small connector which will have either 3 or 4 very thin wires coming and going from it. The level indicator wire is the white and green one.

When I did mine, i took all the wires off an older car and re fitted it to mine, right up to the clocks. I did have to solder a new LED onto the board because there was none on mine. I used a red LED as at the time I was loosing coolant quite quickley and it seemed more appropriate than the standard orangey/yellow

Cheers Baz, thats very useful stuff...

But the low level light is illuminating on my car now. So does this mean the wiring is present going into the clocks, and the lack of a switch is powering it? At what point did you have to add wiring from the other car? Did you physically add connections, or change parts of the loom that were already there?

Will report back on what I find this afternoon...
