hi there,
i have just aquired from an old guy up the street a large quantity of oil. He says this is the best oil you can get??
before i use it in my car i thought id ask your opionions, the oil is brand new, unopened, 5L cans of Silkolene permavisco motor oil SAE 10W/40 ...

When i say its new oil i mean sealed and unopened .. i think the oil is about 10 years old!! does oil have a sell by date?

Also he gave me several gallons of unopened and sealed Silkolene UCL .. upper cylinder lubricant .. Which he assures me is better known as redex??

any advice on how good this is and is it ok to use?

The oil.....Really good stuff, and you'll have no problems with any of it.

I remember Silkolene, it was widely used in racing at one time, and was always a great oil. Had a big following, and was always a top performing oil.

Redex (Your Upper Cylinder Lubricant UCL), is, as you've been correctly told, an upper cylinder lubricant. More suited to older vehicles with adjustable valve, pushrod and tappet gear, and gave more protection to that end of the engine, particularly on start up. It also kept the upper cylinder clean, meaning that there was less need to de-coke the engine from time to time.

Not really used on newer cars now. They run much cleaner on Unleaded.

Baz might be very grateful for this as he's restoring an old Corsair? Worth asking him if you want to pass it on.

We use silkolene in the big racing outboard motors, which get ragged rotten at full throttle for hours on end offshore, and they hold together.

Personally, in my Cossie I choose to use the proper Ford full synthetic, and it definitely helps with cam chain rattle on start up, mine has all but dissapeared now. But this is just a personal preference, I've used this oil ever since I got the car.

I think you'll find the Silkolene will be fine in the 2.3 engine.

When I had the bikes I used nothing but silkolene.
I always found it to be more viscous and cleaner at oil change time.
At the time My mate used to supply me with it at very reasonable prices ;)

Just out of interest how much does the ford synthetic normally set you back for a full change?

i've used silkolene bike oil lots (cos i worked in a bike shop so it was free), good oil, though for my bikes i didnt notice any difference between that and other bike oils, cant see you going wrong with it, especially if you got it cheap. interestingly i've just changed the oil in my scorp TD using shell advance semi 10w 40 bike oil, simply because some years ago i bought a drum of it very cheap, i was just gonna use it in the bike, but being skint at the mo, but what a difference, the car is so silky smooth.......

many thanks to you all. ive only got 16 gallons of the stuff to use so guess ill never have to buy oil again lol
might even put some on the car boot :)

There may be one problem though :-/....the 2.3 tends to prefer SAE 5W/30, although I'm sure 10W/40 should be okay, just a bit thicker :)

My oil change last week cost:-

5 lt Ford Full Synthetic S / SD Oil £17.53

Proper Ford Oil Filter £2.26

plus the VAT from Swale Motors Northfleet, but remember I get 50% trade discount on service items from FMD ;D
