Hi Guys,

I have ordered repair kits for both front and rear break calipers (following an advisory on last years MOT). Do I need any special tools other than the wind back tool?

I was thinking of taking all calipers off and cleaning them up fitting the new seals and putting them back - would it be okay to drain the break fluid or plug them hoses and then bleed the old fluid out?

Is the caliper paint you get at Halfords any good?

You'll need a long 7mm allen key for the fronts, (to take out the front disc pins in figure 9) see below, and the wind back tool for the rears. Also a 15mm spanner. 15mm may not be a size you've got.

The 7mm size isn't usually part of a 'standard' Allen key set, so check before you start. Draper do one for about £3.99 and I think they actually call it a Brake Key. Your local accessory shop will almost certainly have one. Most of the other tools you need are standard tool kit variety.

If you're fitting new seals then I'd be inclined to pump out all the old fluid and take the opportunity of having new fluid throughout. Fitting new seals and then bleeding old fluid through them....Nah!! ;)

Haven't used Halfords caliper paint so can't comment. ;)

re the paint. i just used 'metal' paint for gates, etc.

i liked the colour (minty green).

Thank guys - I do have a Draper Break Key as well - forgot to mention that!

Good point about the old fluid - although it's not very very old, I think I changed it about 2 years ago so was planning to change it again anyway!

Andrew - mmm not sure about the mint green, not with my eyes anyway :-* :D ;D Thanks though will go to B&Q instead of Halfords!! :)

mind that i've got dark wheels now. the mint green looks good shining through. ;D

the good bit about the metal paint is that it's 'one part'. most of the brake paint is 2 part, iirc.

But can it withstand high temperature? You'd be suprised just how hot those calipers get under heavy use...

I've used halfords caliper paint on the probe for about 4 years now, no probs. It does b****r the brushes up though. Still on the same tin, and plenty left. Good thing is it is very quick drying, remove wheel for cleaning, touch up paint, by the time wheels cleaned, its dry.

Scorpio is Pams, she cant understand why I take wheels off my car to clean them ::)

as to painting calipers, thats modifying and totally not allowed :(

it's been on over 10 months now, without a problem. i might give it another coat before harewood, if i get time.

Well I managed to do the front calipers - getting the pistons out was not easy, had I known I would have pushed them out before I had drained the fluid!

Used the Hammerite - didn't dry overnight for some reason, and was still tacky so I got a can of the aerosol Hammerite and sprayed over which helped!

Reading the Granada Haynes manual it mentions a tool for overhauling the rear calipers (not the windback tool)the Scorpio looks the same so will I need it?
