Title: Help, Two coolant leaks
Post by adwozere on Jun 8th, 2007, 11:13am
Hi all
I'm in the process of getting my late 1996 Scorpio Ghia 2.3 16v Auto estate back on the road after 6 months off, But I have 2 problems:

1. The inlet manifold is cracked and leaking around the thermostat,
A new one costs about £270 !!, so do you think it's possible to seal it with something like Quicksteel, inside and out ?

2. I took it out yesterday for it's first spin, and everything was fine until about 5 mins in when my Left foot got covered in very warm water!!
So now I've got water coming out from behind the dash board, in the left corner of the drivers footwell .
I've started to take the panels off the dash, but at the moment I don't know what I'm looking for, and it looks very busy in there with not much room.
I'm I doing the right thing and is there a easier way of finding the leak ?

Hi there...yes, it is possible to seal the manifold inside & out with quik steel, I've done it & it's not shown any signs of leaking now since I repaired it 4 months ago  :)

The leak inside the car is most likely the heater matrix having sprung a leak  :)

If and when I do get the heater matrix out, can it be repaired or do I have to buy a new one.

You'll have to buy a new one if it's leaking I'm affraid....& they're £110 from Ford  :)

P.S.... don't be tempted to buy a 30 quider off Ebay, they're totally different in design & don't fit properly  ;)

Hi
I have got it off now, and there is a split in one of the plastic pipes, so it looks like a new one but I don't want to pay £110, the one they have on ebay it may not fit but will it work ok because £80 is a big gap in there prices.

It's up to you on what you decide to buy, but I thought the same when my matrix went last year & I bought a cheap one.

It went through the opening of the heater box, but would'nt push any further than half way through....... reason being, the cheap matrix had a bulbous plastic end on it that was too large to go through the centre hole of the heater box.

I ended up scrapping the cheap matrix because I'd caused so much damage to the fins that the shop wouldn't refund my money  ::)

So went & bought the proper (£110) matrix from Ford & it fitted like a glove  :)

I suppose you could try & file the centre hole bigger, to make the cheap one fit  ;)

Just another thought....it may be a better idea to get that manifold off first & check the cylinder head. As the main reason the manifold splits is because of a crack between the ports or blown head gasket  :)

Plus, once the manifold is off, it is easier to repair & makes it alot easier to get to the matrix in & out pipes  ;)

Kill two birds with one stone, as they say  ;)
