Title: 24V auto box belts slipping
Post by cossie_al on Jun 19th, 2007, 2:23pm
Well heres my newest fault >:(
Upto about 30mph it would apeer that the belts are slipping in my auto box. feals just like a clutch slipping on a manual.
I have read that the belts can be tensioned when rebuilding the box but is it worth trying this on a box that has covered 152K?
The fluid has always been a healthy colour up untill I noticed the slipping. It has now started to go slightly brownish instead of its usual cherry red.
If it is worth trying to retension the belts can this be done with the box in situ or is it a box out job?

The brake bands? They can be adjusted but it sounds like it may just be worn

Stick a second hand box in it.  ;D

Thanks Highlander,
Can they be adjusted with the box in place?
The mot is due soon so I will sea what that brings, if its a pass I will probably stick another box in.
If it fails then it will be a case of a long list in the parts for sale section :'( :'( :'(

Not 100% sure but i think they can be got at while the box is still on the car, these are the bits on the side of the box.
Does it do it in first, second or both??

Just first then? i'm sure theres one adjuster for each gear so possibly you can get enough on it to keep it going for now  ;D

Okay Heres the latest,
Been under the car and tensioned the bands as described in the overhaul section on the site.
Now if I set off in drive it feals as though it goes up two gears then starts slipping.
Also if I set off in 1st its fine change up manualy to 2nd still fine, put it into drive starts slipping.
A mate has suggested this could be the torque converter ???
Got to admit this is where my knowledge and experience stops.
However, I have read that faulty engine loom can give problems with the torque converter.
Any suggestions warmly welcomed before I torch it :o

Al, I'm no expert but it sounds like worn bands ???

Give the MAF a look over too, maybe it could be playing up :-/

You need a good second opinion, you could get a good recon autobox fitted for far less than I (mug :() did.

Fraid so mate,
Don't want to but I can't realy afford to do a recon gear box.
The only way would be if I could get hold of a real cheap doner car off ebay or somewhere.
So, its not likely but I will try to keap it :(

Al, did you see this (http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/cgi-bin/yabb/YaBB.pl?board=admin3;action=display;num=1181338949) thread?

Might be worth getting in touch with Simon, see if he can help. Might be someone with a good autobox if you search around, I know it's a lot of money but it's a shame to let the car go for peanuts.

what really makes me smile  ;D ;D and I say that tonque in cheek, is that I have a 24v autobox in the garage, complete with all pipework and torque from that 58000 mile scorpio I broke up, which he could have had, had he asked, for nowt !!! yes nowt, cos that's the kind of person I am. I will/try to help anyone in bother.........that's my problem actually, I am soft in that dept. I offered it to a member on here before but I think he scrapped the car instead ??? ???

I have a new found friend who pops round to my home regularly who bulids autoboxes in his sleep, he is well past retirment age and is still building boxes......he built my Rover SD1 box and it is absolutley spot on. He would have looked at the Als box before condeming it. Mind, he did crindge when I told him that peeps on this forum were casually advising to adjust the bands  :o :o :o so the starting point would have been there.

But you live and learn and so unfortunatley on this occassion, I couldn't help.

no skin off my nose.

Al, what about the pressure diaphragm thinggy which sometimes causes problems? There was a post about it the other week, b****red if I can remember its proper name :-/

Lovely car, surely good recon box is the way to go, cheaper than any Honda MPV...have you looked at the Honda yet?.

Yes I do still have the car.
I go on my hols tonight and when I get back the tax and mot will have expired so If I dont get any interest in it by the time I get back its a scrapper.
I have had an absolute gut full of the whole thing now. what with all the money etc I have allready spent, and the fact nobody is interested in the car for £300
and posts like that previous one about the gearbox.
I will be canceling the insurance today and to be perfectly honest if the car wasn't there when I return from holiday I would't care anymore. As far as I am concerned it would be one less hassle.
