Title: Lifespan of an autobox
Post by mattobri on Jun 20th, 2007, 8:47am
Hello everyone,
I'm a newbie looking to buy a Scorpio within the next month or so but would just like to ask the members a quesion. I have had a number of automatic cars all of which have had automatic transmission failures leading to very large repair bills (not Fords I must add). I have looked at the advice here and have been very impressed with the information I have been able to glean to limit the possiblility of this happening to the Scorpio I buy. I did read in a particularily scathing review of the Scorpio that the autobox has a lifespan of only 60-80,000 miles is this true? How long could I realistically expect an autoboz to last. Any feedback greatly appreciated.

Hi mattobri,
I have a 1995 24v saloon that has covered 152k miles.
I have just experienced my first auto box problem. The car has an extensive service history with all bills and invoices so I believe this is the first major auto box problem.

I think like anything else it depends on how well it's been looked after. Regular fluid changes etc prolong the life quite a bit, if the car gets thrashed regularly and the fluid never gets changed the parts in the box wear quicker. Al's has lasted 150k (not bad for any autobox), mine died at 100k...but then my car had been thrashed to death before I bought it. To quote one of the chaps on here (I think it was Dave2302), the Auto box is no better and no worse than many others.

Check the colour of the fluid and the shift quality, both mine and 2 of the Scorps I've seen with looming issues had hard shifts into gear (esp. reverse) and delays to shift, if the fluid looks a bit brown and it delays/audibly thumps into gear, be careful.

Good luck ;)

Regards, Bruce.

Here`s a question, How do you change or top up the autobox fluid?
I`ve only ever read how to check the level, and that Ford will change the fluid at a service (cant remember which mileage though) ???
I`d like to try and keep it all working nicely as it is at the moment, but have never seen any mention of this anywhere on the site, although i`m fairly new.
Also what spec fluid if poss?
Thanks, Jamie

If I need to avoid one that has been thrashed I'd better avoid a cossie then  ;D
