Title: What to disconnect when welding?
Post by Magnusf on Jun 22nd, 2007, 2:34pm
Need to do some welding on my Scorpio 24v estate. What should I disconnect apart from the battery?

Cheers!

I would probably disconnect the alternator.

When I was at college as a trainee mechanic we were always told disconnecting the battery would suffice.
I would point out that scorps have come along way from the mk2 escorts and are just a bit more complicated ;D
If it were mine I would disconect battery, alternator and as its not too hard to get at probably the ecu.

The ECU and CCM are both easily accessible behind the glovebox so disconnect those too.

Thanks guys!
CCM as in Comprehensive Component Monitor? So I should be looking for two electronic boxes behind the glovebox then? What about ABS unit?

Correct, two boxes behind glovebox.  You can also disconnect ABS module as you say (I forgot about that one) - 10mm bolt if I remember, same as for the engine ECU.

Hi there!

Sorry  to bring up such an old thread, but we haven't had time to do the welding yet, will start tomorrow!

I had a look under the dash and found the EEC box, where are the other? Also, how on earth are you supposed to get any kind of spanner or socket in place to loosen the bolt on the connector? Don't tell me you have to drill out all the rivits and lower the box first?

cheers!

Alright! That's alternator, ECU and three other boxes also found behind the dash disconnected. One was orange color, one had something to do with radio frequence (remote for the locks perhaps?) and the last was for PATS. No sigh of ABS, but I believe the box with approved radio frequence sticker was titled something that could be CCM for short, but it wasn't Comprehensive Component Monitor?  :)

I really do hope we can put this car togehter when we're done...!
