It shouldnt be on, default setting is off every time you switch the car on.. why do you think its on?

Yes but if its on when you start the car you have a gearbox problem

sorry about this mate but can u talk me thru this,  when i start the car the light (i think it says o/d off) should be off and that means the o/d IS actually off??

Yep  light should be off by default when you start the car and the car should use all gears.
Once you press the green button on the selector the OD light should light up on the dash and it shouldnt change into top gear

righto, light is OFF,but comes on when i press the switch, when should i be using this function then and could it be that not using it is causing a bit more fuel usage??

No, switching it on will increase fuel usage.
I use it to accelerate as fast as possible :)
All it does is stop the car changing into top gear so you get right up through the powerband without dropping into top.
Just like keeping a manual car in third really

its not an overdrive as such, it doesnt give you a higher gear, it gives you a lower one ;)
It disables overdrive really

The light is basically a warning light to tell you that the overdrive isn't working  :)

Also, how do you know it's a wheel bearing gone ?...has your wheel bearing warning light come on as well ?

Sorry, couldn't resist  ;D......good luck ;)

You can use the button to give a bit of engine brakeing,
there are couple of long downhill sections I use where pressing the button keeps the speed down to the 30 speed limit - rather than using the brake.

The light on the dash is lit when the overdrive function is disabled.  By default, overdrive is enabled and the light will be off - this allows the gearbox to use all four gears for economy.  In some situations you might want to disable the overdrive (i.e. lock out fourth gear from being selected); an example being when towing if the gearbox is constantly swapping between 3rd and 4th gears.  If the light comes on without you pressing the O/D switch then that would indicate a fault.

Hi Dave . How did you manage that? Have you checked your wallet for your bank card? ;D
Thanks again for the throttle sensor (?) diagnosis. I've not had to top the box up since I fitted the new one(or drain it back out the engine!). Ingenious.
