Title: Rear springs Post by jonnycab on Jul 5th, 2007, 3:36am Not quite sure here, but did the facelift saloon have different rear springs to the pre-facelift saloon ? The reason I'm asking is because all the facelifts I've seen, including mine, seem to be lower at the back than pre-facelifts & seem to have more negative camber. My old '95 N reg 2.0 16V Scorp was alot higher at the back & had no negative camber. I'm looking to change the rear springs, as I'm not too keen on the 'squat look' & was just wondering if anyone knew for sure :) I've asked FMD & apparently they don't make the Scorp rear springs anymore ::)....but said there were two types of saloon springs available, depending on whether a tow bar was fitted or not ??? Considering that I take alot of weight in the back (cases & passengers), then a pair of 'tow bar' springs would probably be ideal. Assuming that FMD weren't having me on, does anyone know where to get a pair of 'tow bar' springs ? Is it a possibility......that there is no such thing, as a 'tow bar' spring (rhymes ;D)...... & that actually the earlier Scorp springs were harder/bigger, & that is why they have two different springs listed for the saloon ? :-/ |

Title: Re: Rear springs Post by petehull on Jul 5th, 2007, 7:13am Hi Jc I have been wondering about this also as my car is very low at the back, I wondered if the springs on the estate were different but haven't had time to find out, I know springs are usually colour coded and are made to different specs. i once contacted a company on the web who suppossedly specialised in springs, they told me they did some spring assisters which when fitted don't come into operation until a certain wheight is reached, they wanted about 160 quid for them so I didn't bother. it would be interesting to know why the rear drops down 'cos I don't think the car was manufactured like that although when mot time comes I always mention it and am told there is no visible reason for it unless the springs have become weak (I can't see that myself) so I prefer to wait a while before spending on it, it only concerns me if I have the caravan on, however there is never a problem towing until you go over the stupidityhumps. Don't know if you can get them for the Scorpio, but talk to a firm called Brocotts They actually manufacture and sell SPRING ASSISTERS via Ebay from their works in Yorkshire (Ripon area), so you should be able to get some good advice from them. 01765 604771 About £25.00 a set on average. I know a couple who fitted them for towing their caravan, and they are delighted with them. Might help, anyway. ;) |

Title: Re: Rear springs Post by ColinE on Jul 5th, 2007, 8:34am Hi Guys With the MGBs we have springs are always trouble, I rebuilt a 1964 roadster, ordered and bought new rear springs, these were for a rubber bumper roadster as these car are heavier, after only 1500 miles the spring were almost flat, absolute C**P. I was reading an MG book sent to me from the States, where some guys suggested fitting spring assisters, I have imported these from the states, they have raised the rear end of my cars by some 2.5 inches, now do not have a problem, I have brought in now about 8 sets for other people, these are made for any car not just for MGs. They are about £19 a set the postage is around £25 it takes about 4 weeks delivery. I had some company over here say to me, we can suppy these there is no need to go to the States, when I asked the price I was told £78, (on your bike) Colin E |

Title: Re: Rear springs Post by sector-9 on Jul 5th, 2007, 7:34pm My pre-facelift saloon is also sagging at the back, however I simply put this down to being a heavy car and many years of suspension wear. I wasn't aware there were two types of rear spring available though (except the estate which has different dampers and stuff). I was actually looking for self-levelling dampers to put on my saloon as I also tow a caravan and it does bottom out if the boot is full too. This also happened on my Rover Sterling and seems to be common on large luxury cars with soft suspension. I did fit a pair of those rubber spring assisters which cost around £20 (from local caravan shop) and although they stopped it from bottoming on humps and stuff, they did make the ride much firmer in the rear. No doubt they'd also work on the Scorpio but I don't think it would raise the back end at all, so it'd still look 'tired'. Darren |
