Title: testing for drains
Post by tintin on Aug 19th, 2007, 11:14am
ok, does anyone have a guide to testing for a drain on the battery. im embarassed to say its been 10 years since i have had to do it, and have forgotten.

from what i remember from my triumph herald, i need to disconnect earth, and measure between earth and battery, measure ohms (10/100?).

given our cars propensity to develop drains, it would be a useful write-up.....

cheers

With all doors closed, ignition off and lights off...

Disconnect negative lead from the battery, then connect the meter between lead and battery terminal - in other words across the two points you have just parted. The meter must be set on a DC current range. I have not tried doing it, but I would expect the current draw to be just a milliamp or two once it all settles down after the meter is connected. It has to maintain the ECU and radio memories, clock, plus the alarm if locked, whilst parked.
