Title: Musical ABS
Post by Tompion on Sep 9th, 2007, 9:48pm
First the warning, if you blow up your laptop/tape deck/wheel sensor - nothing to do with me Guv :-[
Had a play today trying to generate a wave form from an ABS sensor. I linked a wheel sensor up to the laptop & recorded the output using a freebie music editor called WavePad. I would imagine you could use a tape deck & then transfer to a PC if you don’t have a laptop.
The screen grab is at walking pace so spinning the wheel by hand would probably do. The signal was a bit high for my laptop, had to have the input set really low.

Great idea for those of us who don't own an oscilloscope !!!

How exactly did you link it up?
I'm assuming the two sensor wires connected to the mic input of the laptop??
So this would show up any problems with a sensor?
(sorry i'm a bit technically challenged when it comes to the electronic stuff)  ;D

Yep, connected the 2 wires from a rear sensor to the mic socket.
I'm hoping it will show up a faulty sensor.
I plan to introduce some faults to see what happens, but don't have time at the moment, so I thought I'd post it & see if anyone else wants to experiment.

Neat idea!

Can I suggest a better way to connect?

Instead of taking the sensor straight into the mic socket, connect it via a 1Kohm (or 10k) potentiometer. Connect 1 sensor wire to one end of the pot and the other to the other end, to this latter connection also take the ground connection of the mic input socket. To the centre tap connection of the pot, you connect the mic input connection. Something like this...

Pot terms
One end    -------- sensor wire A

Tap           --------- to mic input

Other end ------ sensor wire B + mic ground wire

Then adjust the pot so the mic input level can be set about mid way.
