Title: This is how much a Timing Chain change costs Post by amigafan2003 on Sep 19th, 2007, 8:00pm Just been quoted on on all the parts needed to change a timing chain for the Cosworth 24v - a tad over £1000! Title: Re: This is how much a Timing Chain change costs Post by amigafan2003 on Sep 20th, 2007, 8:02am Wondering if it's worthwhile just to change the tensioners and the guides but leave all the sprockets and chains as they are? Engine only rattles for a second on startup and a very intemittent rattle when warm (i.e. they'll be a microsecond rattle then nothing for a few seconds, then another slight rattle, then nothing for while etc. Can't be heard in the cabin). Then again, just added up all the parts to see how much it would be to take everything off for a good visual inspection, only £100 inc oil and coolant. I think I'll do that, and if the chain and sprockets look ok, I'll replace any guides that need replacing ands clean the hydrualic tensioners. Should be a cheaper way to do it - I'm not looking to get the engine to 200,000 miles, just a few years luxurious motoring :-) |

Title: Re: This is how much a Timing Chain change costs Post by v4-max aka Cheekyboy1 on Sep 21st, 2007, 10:06pm you do know that all cosworths have the slight rattle on start up dont you?. mine used to do it all the time but since switching to magnatex oil start up chirp much improved. |

Title: Re: This is how much a Timing Chain change costs Post by Highlander on Sep 22nd, 2007, 11:41am Well thats not true, I have two that dont, even after a couple of months standing and I've seen plenty others that dont. Its one of those things sellers use on their description... "Slight rattle on start up but then they all do dont they" NO they bloody dont! ;D |

Title: Re: This is how much a Timing Chain change costs Post by Baz on Sep 22nd, 2007, 7:54pm Well mine has rattled since I bought it with 50K on the clock and it now has 106k. If it goes bang I'll buy another. Seems cheaper than fixing it!! |

Title: Re: This is how much a Timing Chain change costs Post by howiedintheplace on Sep 22nd, 2007, 11:13pm No a 24V engine should not rattle at any time. They can last ages thou with a rattle. It is so important to change the oil when you should. That is what makes the difference ;) |

Title: Re: This is how much a Timing Chain change costs Post by v4-max aka Cheekyboy1 on Sep 23rd, 2007, 8:20am mine has rattled on start up for 1 second since i have had it. (51,000) now on 57,000. i have changed the oil and filter every 1,000 miles. chains and guides are in perfect condition. but it still rattles if left standing for awhile. |

Title: Re: This is how much a Timing Chain change costs Post by howiedintheplace on Sep 23rd, 2007, 10:15pm Trust me they shouldn't rattle, I have rebuilt over 20 BOBs now, some for Ford dealerships & they don't rattle after I have rebuilt them 8) I rebuilt a BOB that was like new last year that had only done 33K & even that had 2 broken guides. Funny thing was it didn't rattle but had lost oil pressure due to the broken guides blocking up the oil pick-up :o |

Title: Re: This is how much a Timing Chain change costs Post by amigafan2003 on Sep 24th, 2007, 10:07pm It's not the rattle on startup that I'm concerned about, it's the intermittent rattle when warm that's got me planning to do the blades. Besides, £180 to get the engine sorted (which otherwise runs as sweet as a nut) or £250 for an engine off of ebay of unkown origin and condition? |

Title: Re: This is how much a Timing Chain change costs Post by amigafan2003 on Sep 25th, 2007, 3:02pm Right - now I'm really confused by all the replies here. On the one hand, some people seem to saythe rattle is a bad thing and get it sorted. Others are saying live with the rattle, the engine still might last a while yet. Some others are saying just let it go bang and drop another engine in. I'd be interested how easy it is to lift an engine out with the gearbox in situ and drop a replacement in. I was thinking of keeping all the guides/blades in case the engine goes pop and bung them on the replacement engine whilst it's out of the car. I have an engine crane and stand so that's not an issue. As always, interested in your opinions. |

Title: Re: This is how much a Timing Chain change costs Post by Highlander on Sep 25th, 2007, 6:06pm Well heres my opinion on it ;D No they are not supposed to rattle, if they do it means something is wrong. However a lot of them live with the rattle for years with no problem. If you do the job its expensive (£1000 plus even if you do it yourself) If a chain breaks or jumps a cog then the repair job will cost around the same price (£1000 plus) You could replace the engine with a second hand one, i've seen them go on here for £100 which seems well worth a gamble. In summary, i'd say spending £1000 on a car that probably wont be worth much more than that even with new chains fitted seems false economy. Personally I'd always go down the replacement engine route especially if you are doing it yourself (but i'm a tight Scotsman) :) |

Title: Re: This is how much a Timing Chain change costs Post by amigafan2003 on Sep 25th, 2007, 7:31pm Okay, engine replacement route sounds like a plan then - lets hope it doesn't go pop while I'm on holiday (then again, I have full RAC cover so meh). So, what's it like to remove an engine from a Scorpio then? I could get my EFI Pinto out of the Sierra with my eyes closed but the Scorp looks a bit more involved. I'd be interested if it could be done with the box in place. |
||
Title: Re: This is how much a Timing Chain change costs Post by Highlander on Sep 25th, 2007, 7:39pm It can but you need the front of the car up high enough to give you the clearance, its a fair length with the gearbox on the back :) |
||
Title: Re: This is how much a Timing Chain change costs Post by amigafan2003 on Sep 25th, 2007, 9:48pm So the engine needs to come out from below? ??? |
||
Title: Re: This is how much a Timing Chain change costs Post by Highlander on Sep 25th, 2007, 10:01pm no from above, but the gearbox has to drop down to make the angle to remove it, if the car is sitting on the ground you cant get the box low enough to get it out |
||
Title: Re: This is how much a Timing Chain change costs Post by amigafan2003 on Sep 25th, 2007, 11:24pm That's what I was asking though, if the engine can be removed with the gearbox being left in the car. |
||
Title: Re: This is how much a Timing Chain change costs Post by Highlander on Sep 25th, 2007, 11:39pm Ah got you, i read it meaning the box coming out with the engine. Not sure about that one, never tried that myself, i would reckon there is enough clearance at the front with the fans and rad removed to do it |

Title: Re: This is how much a Timing Chain change costs Post by howiedintheplace on Sep 26th, 2007, 1:23am Well this thread has gone a bit crazy in my view. You want to replace a dodgy engine with what is probably another engine of similiar condition but your gonna check it over first & almost certainly replace the same parts that your would have replaced on your fitted engine. ??? Err crazy. Please check it first. Take the cam covers off, do the top cogs show wear? Yes then go ahead & look for a better engine. No then it just needs guides & the tensioners cleaned. Either replace all the guides or the only ones needed, it's up to you. To sum up: I have done this very job for as little as £100. Rattle Gone. The 24V is cheap if you know what your doing with it. Yes you can take the engine out from above but it's far easier to just drop the whole front end out under the car. That's how they are built & everything is set up that way to make it easy. |
