Title: is the ford main dealer correct?
Post by big_neil on Oct 11th, 2007, 12:07pm
i,ve owned my ultima since it was two and a half years old (22,000 mls) and every year i,ve flooded it underneath with waxoyl and a pressure airline. it,s now done 68,000mls and today whilst in for its full service my mate said some of the back chassis is corroding, he had to weld it up. he reckons it,s double skinned at the point of corrosion and it was from the inside out , i thought i,d got inside all the channels and nooks and crannies but obviously not. as the mileage was creeping up i asked if he could drop the gearbox pan and change the fluid and filter as descrubed on this website, not a prob he said and i gave him a copy of the info off the website relating to the change. when he contacted the fmd for the parts he was told resolutely that there was no filter in the box just switches . what they sent was an in line filter to cut into one of the fluid pipes to the transmission cooler. he asked if i wanted that doing and i said no, leave well alone please . did ford change the spec on later cars and not put a flilter in the gearbox ? does any one know?(Dec 98 24v ultima)

The only change from original when I had mine changed was the bolt securing the mesh filter to the body of the box had to be shorter (or longer ::) ) than the original because the filter had been modified at the point where the bolt was.

thats exactly right highlander, FMD said there was not a filter in the auto box, thats why they sent an in line one to install. my mate at the unipart garage where i helpout was quite prepared to do the job but the FMD went into all the micro fisches on the scorpio and said there aint one in the box. i can,t believe there aint a filter somewhere in the system for the auto fluid .

Neil,
don't know if it's any help but the finnis number for the filter which is in a 2.3 is 4000411 and the description comes out as "n/stk s screen assy" if it is the same set up you will also need 2 (I think) "o" rings for where the "screen assembly" connects to the pipework inside the box

Of course there is a filter! :o
Purolator P1236.
It stares right at you when you drop the pan:

The older model (I think pre 1995) was all sheet metal, the newer one is half plastic (the lower part) half sheet metal and yes, the bolts have different lengths.
It is very unlikely that it was removed  as the suction point on the valve body would be too high and there would be zero line pressure (unless the box is grossly overfilled).
FORD will also tell you that the box is filled "for life" and the filter is not a service item! Better ignore this nonsense!
Cheers,
Mike

Whilst on the subject of non servicible items, the older Mondeo auto boxes don't ahve a filler point to top up the transmission oil!!!! Or for that matter a dipstick to check it !?!?!
How bizzare.
