Title: Tyre wear
Post by Tons_of_fun on Oct 25th, 2007, 4:20pm
Hi all, just noticed the outer edge of my front N/S tyre is scrubbing away! So before i book it in to get the tracking done ,was wondering if there are any other more "sinister" causes for this wear that i should also look out for ? (with my luck it,s bound to not be as simple as tracking )  :'( :'( :'(.Thanks in advance...Craig

Thats what im afraid of m8.Am i correct in assuming the bushes arent changable & that i need a new wishbone ?

Bushes can be changed, it's the ball joint which is part of the wishbone and can't be changed separately.

Just a quick bit of advice here  :)

If the wishbone bushes are shot, then the balljoint will probably be quite worn as well, as it's as old as the bushes  ;)

P.S....my wifes Mondeo suffers terribly from N/S/F outside tyre wear....she works for the local council & gets free parking in the multi-story. Unfortunately it's on the top floor.

Hard right turning up & down six stories everyday does give the outside of the N/S/F tyre a good hammering  ::)

Inner edge  tyre  wear  is  more  usual  when  the wishbone  is  shot.

As the Camber and Caster  angles  are not adjustable  on the Scorp I'm wondering  if you  or a prevoius owner has  given  the front  N/S  wheel  a
serious  kerbing   that  has  knocked  the Camber  setting  out a  fair bit.

Well the wife took it shopping a month ago,so it,s more than likley to have been kerbed then  ::) ::) (wheels are fine though).I got it booked in for monday so heres hoping  :-X :-X.At very least i can see it costing me for the tracking & a pair of front tyres (wont have odd tyres /tread depths on the same axel).Im cookie like that  ::) ::)

Just to keep you informed, took the car to 2 garages & both have said the same...Tracking is spot on,no play in any suspention or wishbone parts, all bushes fine, ball joints are all ok.One mechanic even checked all the rear end & that was found to be ok as well.Only option left is to have the angles re set with 4 wheel alignment but im pretty sure that castor & camber angles are not adjustable on these ? (correct me if im wrong) .I did notice however that when the car was in the air the bottom of the tyre in question was not flat & sort of "domed".A significant difference to the o/s tyre which looked normal.A defective tyre maybee ?.They are Avon zz3 in 225 50 16.Any opinions gratefully recieved.Craig  :)

Could be a defective tyre.....I recently had a tyre that had seemed to have worn off at an almost 45 degree angle on the inside  ???

I took it down the tyre fitters & he said it was due to a fault with the steel belting inside, causing the edge of the tyre to become deformed....it was a budget tyre though (Accelera)  ::)

I think you hit the nail on the head there JC.My tyre is exactly the same as that but un the outside edge instead. If it is a duff tyre im not going to be happy.I usualy go for Federal tyres (around £60 each),but decided to go for these avons (£89 each) as i,ve read good reports on them. They grip slightly better than the fedrals but are so much more noisy on the motorway.Im going back to the tyre place in the morning & see what they have to say as i,ve only done 2000 miles on these tyres  >:( >:( ::)

Well went to the tyre garage this morning & they had a look & they too couldnt find a problem.they had the tyre off and said it was fine  ???.Not being happy driving the car around like it is i decided to ignore solihull councils ban on working on your cars on the drive & got the thing up on stands.Within 2 mins i discovered the n/s track control arm was BENT.Not hard to miss really, put a straight edge against the arm & it,s clearly obvious  :o.So after calling the garage & made a few suggestions about there efficiency of fault diagnosis,i phoned my local parts guy & got one on order (£22.07 + vat).Guess what im doing monday then.Honestly ...Mechanics...I,ve s**t em  ;D ;D ;D

Well done Lt. Columbo  ::)

  Bloody mechanics !!!!!

If you want a job done well, you gotta do it yourself.

Like I said,  someone's  kerbed it !!

I'll leave you  to  mete out appropriate  punishment to the miscreant.
